Help Is colubrid quarantine necessary?

I have an assorted collection of boids and am in the process of ending the quarantine for my last addition. I have been considering aquiring a new addition, but my significant other is concerend with me re-occupying another room in the house. If I purchase a colubrid, is it necessary to keep them seperate from my existing collection?

Thanks again,
Dustin

Re: Is colubrid quarantine necessary?

Far as I know, colubrids may also be susceptible to some diseases, and I would not buy any new animal and have it near any of my others unless it is an immunized dog or other such.

Just keep him in a tank/tub by your bed.

That's not bad. My "dining room" is a snake exhibiton.

Re: Is colubrid quarantine necessary?

Hehehe....yeah, I recently had my ever so curious coastal carpet residing in our bedroom and even though my girl was cool with it, she was certainly glad to see him leave. I guess that I will just have to convince her that we don't get enough guests to really need a guest room.

Re: Is colubrid quarantine necessary?

You should keep any new critters in isolation so you can watch for signs of potential illness or parasites. If you can keep them in quarantine and notice the new snake has mites, you can treat them, wash your hands/arms well and probably not infest the rest of your collection.

a new addition is a new addition, the steps to be taken are the same if it were a lizard, frog, snake, turtle, etc.

Re: Is colubrid quarantine necessary?

Just backing up what Rachel said, even though IBD isn't an issue mites sure are. I brought mites into my collection when I purchased my JCP. Luckily only my BP ended up catching them also (I had 9 snakes at the time) but it took me well over a month to completely rid myself of them. I was lucky that I did not spread them to the other snakes and did not have any deaths. I will never fail to quarantine again.
