Re: red tail boa feeding problem
How old is she? What size prey is she eating? when is the last time she ate? are you trying to feed live or frozen? How long have you had her?

Re: red tail boa feeding problem
does she have a warm side? she needs a basking spot of 91...
you should deff. pre-kill the rat... MUCH safer for your boa! you can also buy frozen online... How often are you feeding her regularly? has she poo'ed since her last meal?
medium rats for an 11 month old seems a little big... is she a BCI? pics of her? and 2 weeks is nothing for a yearling... That's a good gap actually... Once mine hit medium rats I move them to a 2 week schedule... A boa can go months without eating with no issues... I fast mine for 3-4 months in winter so they can use their body fat and stay lean, muscular and healthy! I wouldn't worry about her just yet

im not worried about her not eating its just that i have to mutilate the rat for her to want to eat it. i dont have a basking spot cause the heat light i got is to powerful for this time of year.

????? Why would you have to mutilate the rat??
PS... I highly suggest using either UTH or radiant heat panel....... Basking lights can get way too hot... and they are either on or off.....

Re: red tail boa feeding problem
use a dimmer or a smaller wattage bulb. or an under tank heater on a dimmer.
if you aren't worried about her not eaten then why bother cutting the rats head open? she will eat when she's hungry...

Re: red tail boa feeding problem
again.... she will eat if she's hungry. I bet if you don't feed her for like 3 weeks she will eat regularly and it won't hurt her to go that long

Re: red tail boa feeding problem
2 weeks is not a long time for a snake on medium rats to go without eating. Wait another week or two and try again. If you are feeding a medium rat weekly, you may be overfeeding and she's probably just not hungry. And please switch to pre-killed and then to frozen-thawed as quickly as possible.
Aside from the dangers of feeding live prey, they can also intimidate a snake, putting them off feed.

Re: red tail boa feeding problem
do you kill the rat before you cut its head open? If so then why even try live at all?
