I killed a rat but my snake hasn't eaten it yet.
How long should I leave it in there to give him a chance to eat it and if he doesn't is it possible to refrigerate it or freeze it and try again?
Also... if I do freeze it, the last time it exploded in the microwave while I was trying to defrost it (don't worry had it in a zip lock). Suggestions?
One more... I don't enjoy killing them. What is the least painful for them and me?
Thanks

You can leave it overnight, but do not refreeze it. Microwaving a rat is not a good idea as you have witnessed yourself. If you do not feel comfortable killing the prey items, go with frozen/thawed. I thaw my prey items in warm water.

I also thaw my frozen prey in warm water, the few i got from the breeder who i bought my snake from. Other than that, you may be like me and there isnt a pet store selling frozen rats. So i have to kill them myself. I also dont enjoy it, the quickest way that was suggested to me, that is also the least "painful" for me too is to put it in a pillowcase and give it one good whack against a wall. One hint is not to do it on a white wall, cuz you could get a little blood, mine usually dont bleed though. I hit em on a brick wall in front of my house kills em quick and easy and i dont have to watch it.

You CAN leave them in overnight, but as was stated, it may nt be a good idea to refreeze at that time, decomposition has started already. If you dont want to waste the rat, afte 2-3 hours if no interest is shown you CAN refreeze it. To thaw it out get a bucket of hot tap water , do not boil the water, just hot out of the tap. Dump the rat in the water and wait 15-20 minutes, depending on the size of the rat. If you have poor water quality I would keep the rat in a ziplock baggie.
What kind of snake are you trying to feed? What are it's living conditions? Housing, temps, and such. I must congradulate you for at least feeding pre-killed pery to your snake. Great start as a herp keeper!!!
