female BCI a little under 2' born 3/13/03, shed 3/21, 6/20, and then tonight 7/25, no problems on the first two sheds with WSacBass who i purchased her from and that is not an issue as i know she treated her great!

But... She was goin through the normal pre-shed process nothing special although she soaked more than i have ever seen any of my snakes soak prior to a shed (hours and hours per day), the temps were all as they should be and humidity the last week has been between 70-80% and then tonight i came home and found part of her shed in the cage, just about 4 inches and it was off the tail. And the rest of her shed was wrapped around her stomach, i thought at first that she had crawled back into her shed but then saw that about 4-5 inches below the shed wrapped around her hadnt shed yet. Closer review showed that the shed from her head down wrapped up so tight that it could not physically pass the thicker portion of her stomach, she had eaten 7 days earlier and defecated the previous day so any bulge from feeding was not visible. So why would this shed wrap so tight and small that it got stuck on her belly. It was actually so VERY tight that i had to soak her a bit to soften it all up, then (thank goodness she is SO calm) i slowly ripped the all ready shed skin little by little to break up the "ring" of skin that was stuck and would not pass, as soon as i go that loose she shed the rest of the way in about 3 seconds no problem at all.

So any ideas as to how that happened. Without my help there is no way that shed would have finished, it was stuck on there VERY tightly. Even after removing the tight shed ring you could see where it had been as im sure her efforts to remove it had made it so tight that she had squished her insides all down furtherand it lumped after that part of her body, after about 10 minutes she was back to normal though.

Hope this all made sense but i can see how some of it may not have. Any more info needed just ask.

Hey Kent, the two babies I got from Marguerite have shed twice since I've had them (both of them shed just a few days ago) and I haven't had any problems like you descibed. I've never had a snake have difficulty shedding in that manner. The only thing I can think of is that as her shed was rolling back it somehow knotted upon itself instead of just peeling back, and gradually started constricting her. I gotta believe it was just an aberrant circumstance and likely won't happen again. Sounds like you caught it in time however and all is well!!! It happens. I have this with amazons fairly often. What happened was she soaked so much and probably started shedding IN the water. Wet shed is like that clingy plastic wrap stuff you use when you can't find the lid to tupperware. roll some of that up and see what a tight little band it can make. Anyway, she would have eventually wiggled on out but you did good by ripping it and assisting her with the rest.

I suspected that it might have something to do with the soaking, but really didnt have much of a clue how that would affect it. What you said makes sense since she has been in the water almost 24/7. It definitely wrapped up real tight and if you had seen her you might not think she could get out of it on her own, she is really soft bodied and it had her pretty constricted like she had been workin on it for a while and just got it tighter as it got to the thicker portion of her body. You've got more experience than me, glad to hear what i did was the right thing. It seemed like a safe thing to do, i was only worried about making sure i didnt go ripping at the stuff that hadnt shed yet. She was a little touch today just from all the stress i put her through yesterday, but ate a few minutes ago and is doing great, thanks for the input guys.
