Did you wash your hands after handling the rat? If the snake is still in feeding mode and your hand smells like a rat, it might mistake your hand for food.

After the snake swallows try leaving it be
for ten minutes or so then gently tip the snake from
the feed tote to the floor.
Once my animals hit the floor they seem to snap out
of feeding mode.Good luck.

boa constrictors should never be eatting pinky mice. even a new born is much to large for a pink mouse.

thanks billy...I was just about to get postal on this one. I was just looking at the photos where these snakes are for sale. They are way underfed and look like strings. 6 months old and haven't grown a bit. I have newborns bigger than these snakes. The reason they are biting is because they are starving. Even as a first meal, Pink rats or hopper mice is what you feed, never pink mice. Sometimes a runt baby may need a fuzzy for a feeding or two to get started but should keep upgrading from there. A boa constrictor should never even know what a pink mice looks like.

Sometimes, depending on the snake, you may need to leave them in the tote a half hour, hour, or more until they come off their 'feeding' high a little bit. Some snakes (especially hungry ones) really go into feed mode and anything at that time is a target and/or (to them) hopefully a meal. You just handled it too soon after it ate...give it a little time.
...and yeah, bag the pinky mice if that whats you were referring to as "pinkies". IMO rats (pinkies, fuzzies, weanlings, etc.) should be the diet of boas and pythons from day one...unless they're otherwise impossible to get. But in this day and age it shouldn't be too tough.

what do you people use for a tote, that would be big enough for a full grown boa?
I put a couple inches of hot water in the bathtub to warm it up, drain the water and dry the tub out. Thats my feeding "tote"
