Snake ID

Not sure if this is in the right spot but oh well. Paging the Mid Atlantic herp folks...

My mother was at the river yesterday (the James River in Richmond, VA) and had a close encounter with an unknown snake. She was proud that she didn't scream lol. She said it was around a foot or so long, fairly slender, and had milk snake like bands of tan and faded red. She didn't see any black so the description is the best she could give me. I'm at a loss. It was IN the river, swimming against the current in a few inches of water. Moving quite quickly and according to her quite confidently. Any ideas? Paging John White.....

Re: Snake ID

I agree with VacaMoo25. Without a pic, I would have to say Water Snake. Probably northern.

Re: Snake ID

I agree with Vacamoo25, a juvenile northern water snake.

Northern Banded water snake, bro. I used to catch them by the truckload exactly where your mother was. They're seriously so common and plentiful there that literally EVERY time I went there to visit or fish I left with more than one snake, and saw more than 5. Perfectly harmless but pretty nippy.
