Hi I just purchased my fist colombian red tail boa and I have a few questions. I have done my research but have not found as much info on them that I would have liked. My first question is what size cage for an adult. Also what should the humidity be at?
Thanks
Brian
P.S Also Does any body use vision cages for there adult colombain boas and if so witch one?

probe i've heard a lot better things about boaphile plastic's and other then that one of the head admins here is jeff ronne's sales rep!! his nicknames morti... give him a call sometime he'll take care of ya! http://www.boaphile.com as for cage size it depends on how big your snake gets
rule of thumb is one sq foot per foot of snake

Another option in plastic is Snakehut Modular.... I have got one about a week ago and so far it seems to be working out great!
Another estimate for cage size that some use is....
Cage Width = 3/4 the length of the snake (8' snake = 6' wide cage)
Cage Depth = 1/2 the length of the snake )8' snake = 3' deep cage)

Faze... Morti is no longer affiliated with the Boaphile. Joel Dubay now has that position. He is the one you need to talk to Probe.

Home Depot/Lowes have everything you need to build a cage to fit your needs. The general consensus is 4x2x2 is the minimum.

Ah Stormy, is that the 'new' math I have heard so much about? J/K

I am just curious as to how you went about finding information about boas on the internet. You said you could not find all the info. you wanted--how did you go about it? I had no problem accessing the information when I needed it--thats how I found this site, actually. Did you use askjeeves.com? Just curious...and welcome!!

Well first off thanks every one for the fast and helpful replies. I did do a yahoo search first and didnt find that much that had to do with BCI more on BCC. Today I used google search and found a lot more and I also purchased the boa constrictor manual. I just picked up my snake this past weekend at the NY reptile expo its a hatchling. Right now she is in a 20 gallon since I had it already. I am a little stuck on what to use as for as cageing I have been hearing good things about boaphile plastics and vision cages. The only bad thing I heard about vision cages was the glass blows out easly when stacking cages. This can cause a problem for me since on the bottom is going to be my burmese in the V632 cage the redtail ontop of that and a corn snake on top of her. Maybe I will just custom build my cages it will save me moeny but it will just take a while to find the time to build three cages like that. Well thanks again.
Brian
P.S what does every body use? custom made, vision, boaphile plastic?

Hey, probe! Sounds like you're off to a good start... I mean, you're in the right place, welcome!
personally, my caging is a mix of tanks (for the smaller ones,) and custom built enclosures. Lots of people have pics up of their cages in the "Caging / Housing for reptiles / Husbandry Items" forum...
That being said, I do think I would purchase a boaphile over a vision cage-- I like the whole expandable cages and color options dealie...

I don't own a boaphile cage but when a purchased my vision cages it came down to choosing between the two. I like the vision cages and have had no problems with the doors. I have the 54"w X 36"d X 18"h which is plenty big enough for even the largest boas. I guess my deciding factor was price. The Vision ended up being less for that size. I paid no shipping because I picked them up. Russ at visioncages has all the info.

I also use vision cages I purchased mine at LLL reptiles.com. I have a 72x28x18 I got it for around 3oo$'s I have had no problems with mine and that tank is more than big enough for my colombian redtail. Everybody says they don't hold humidity, at first that was the case, but all i did was tape off some of the vents and added some peat moss now I just mist the peat moss and my humidity stays at around 60-70% for about 2-3 days. This last time I misted its lasting for more than a week now. Personally I prefer them over boaphiles because they have better dimensions to choose from and they also have the sliding glass door so you don't have to open the whole tank at once. Well thats my .02 and welcome to reptile haven.
