Hi all. I was gone on vacation for a week last week and when I got home, I went to Petco (I know, evil empire of the pet world) because it's the only place anywhere near me that has feeder mice. Of course, I ended up with rotten mice. Well, I managed to get two live fuzzies from the local pet store that doesn't usually have them. This snow corn (about 2 1/2 feet) fed on live pinkies and fuzzies for most of it's life and was recently (about 2 months ago) switched to frozen. He made the switch no prob. My only problem is that now, when all I have for him to eat until the next petco shipment comes in is live, he won't do it! Advice?

Great question Rev!
He should be fine for a few more days, so whack and freeze for at least 3 or more days.
Oh yeah, use a baggie!

I also had that type of prob, but mine was I used to feed him live I know its not good but one day i fed live and got scratched pretty bad on the head. I tried to feed him live the next week and he wouldn't touch it. When i killed it for him he took it very easy. I would suggest that if you buy live to whack then feed him. The way I do it is Instead of hitting them against the floor I take a shoe string tie it around there neck then pull(its easy for me then to whack i don't know why(just my .02)

Well, he decided that he didn't like those little buggers crawling all over him and ate them shortly after I posted. I didn't really want to whack because they're so small (fuzzies) and just because I was fairly certain that he would eat them if I gave him time. Thanks for all of your help.

You know that the prey biting back is not the only problem with feeding live...
Live rodents carry parasites that can be transfered to your snake. That can even happen after the rodent is dead. The only way to insure that you are not giving your snake tape worms, hook worms, round worms, and god knows what all else is to feed only frozen/thawed rodents. Freezing kills the parasites and converts them to just a little more protein.
Just more food for thought concerning your snake's food.

fuzzies arent too small to wack, i do it all the time for my friends carpet python. You just have to be more gental with them and if u feel that wacking them isnt doing the job just hit them hard enough to knock them out then choke them until the heart stops. It always works for me.

What would you suggest I feed it? I go by the 1 1/2 times the size of the head rule.

I thought that it was the thickest part of the snake that determines what size prey to feed not the head. If feeding by the head rule was the case I would still be feeding small rats to my 5' boa. When she eats large rats.
I have a 27" corn that feeds on 2 fuzzy RATS...not mice. Just my opinion but I think you should start feeding fuzzy rats. They are more health than mice.
From what I have learn on this sight and others is: If you see a bulge in the snake after it has eaten and remains for 24 to 48 hours then you are feeding the appropriate sized prey. Does this happen for your snake? If not then step up - if it does happen then I would say that it is the right size prey. Other will be along to correct me or add to this.
Just my opinion though....Good luck!!! Jamie
