Just wanna know about hides...
My other half is not here to ask, and I do not know as much as my husband does, Why do boa's need a hide spot. I think I know the answer, but just thought I'd be sure. Sheila

Re: Just wanna know about hides...
I personally think all snakes(lizards, frogs, dogs, cats, horses, alligators, people, birds.......) need a hide spot.
It helps them feel secure, thereby reducing their stress, which can cause both health and temperament issues in snakes(et al).

Re: Just wanna know about hides...
In nature, (the "wild") they will find a spot to hide if they feel insecure, shy, threatened, sick, too warm or too cold. So you have to give them one in captivity to meet their needs. The nocturnal snakes will generally stay in their hides during the day and come out at night, like most other animals that hunt at night, and like some people I know.

Re: Just wanna know about hides...
What they said. Also, depending on the type of boa you have, some are ambush hunters. My Brazilian Rainbow is nocturnal and likes to ambush, also dumerils do it as well. You should have at least 2 hides, one on cold and one on hot side of tank. The more the better
A happy boa means you get to keep all 10 fingers.

Re: Just wanna know about hides...
In the wild, snakes are vulnerable to all kinds of predators, especially when they're small. Since they sleep during the day, they try to find a place where they won't be spotted. They like hides that are cozy, so they can feel the sides of the hide touching them. (I guess that means no room for a predator to sneak in). They also like to hide to ambush their prey.

Re: Just wanna know about hides...
my snakes cannot tip over their hides. If you use a cardboard box, put a flat, heavy stone on the inside floor of the box near to the opening and then cover it with the substrate you are using, or with crushed up paper/dry leaves.
