Just wondering, Do snakes need a vitamin supplement. I saw one web site that said you should dip you mouse in a liquid vitamin before feeding your snake. Does anyone do this?? Is it needed for a healthy snake? Do snakes need extra vitamin D to metabolize calcium? [addsig]

I use Reptocal for my guys. Its a powdered vitamin supplement. Just moisten the rodent and sprinkle it on.

If snakes are fed a consistant good diet
(ie, mice, rats for our boas) there is no need
for a vitamin suppliment or those vita-sprays
or whatever. They are just clever marketing
tools that get people to spend money on
something they don't need. So long as your
mice/rats aren't freezer burned/cooked (less
nutrition) then there is no need for any
supplements. In the wild these snakes do not
get supplements or go "lick rocks or eat
plants for nutriants" like other animals do...
It is much more important for the rats and
mice they eat to be getting a balanced diet,
the snakes gets everything it needs from
the rodents.
Just trying to save you some money...
I can look for sources of info about this if
someone really wants, but it really is
unneeded. Don't feel bad, it's just clever
marketing... same as those "reptile basking
lights"... marketing, marketing, marketing.
FYI!

No need to look it up for me. I kind of suspected that it was a money racket. I thought a nice healthy mouse should have all the vitamins they need. I just wanted to make sure i was correct. Thanks to everybody for your help.
I noticed that there is alot of bad Red-Tail information out there on the www, but for the most part I recognize it as people trying to make money, or people falling for gimmicks.[addsig]

I know this is going to sound unrelated but if ya think about it...it's the same thing. Do you know what most fishing lures on the market are designed to actually catch?...FISHERMEN! not fish.
If you want to spray something on your rodents just spray em with mineral oil...It gives snakes a nice irredescence...Does this improve their health? probably not but it makes em prettier to look at.

Face it, we live in a gullible society. Otherwise, we would have stopped seeing those #$%^$%^$%^$%^& Ronco commercials years ago. To quote (well almost) Robin Williams, "Nowadays you could paint 3 Gucci stripes on a turd and sell it for $100". The brand name has changed (I know you all have a Tommy Hillfiger something or other in your closet, for example), but the principle is still the same. To keep this post from getting totally unrelated to our boa friends, I will close with this statement. There are a lot of people out there who want to put the squeeze on you. Try getting dead rats from the pet store they are also cheaper and deep it in chicken broth with a little juice like V8 tomato but only poor a LITTLE or the snake might not eat it.

Dead rats? I hope you meant pre-killed or frozen. It is way cheaper to order them off the web in bulk. Anyways, since the topic has been brought back up, I'll throw my .10 I see no "special" vitamins or nutrients in sprays. It's just a way of making a profit. If they can convince you with it, they'll continue selling it.
