Does cage size effect snake size?

My friend owns a bearded dragon and asked me if snakes climatize to the size of their tank like dragons do. I had no idea. Right now I have a 3 foot tank but I will be building a 4x2x1 foot tank soon, I was told that was large enough but is his length going to be limited? I have a RTB.

Re: Does cage size effect snake size?

NO!

Snakes grow as big as they'll grow, no matter how big or little their cage is. What determines a snake's size is how much you feed them. Feed them too much, and they get too big too fast and then die because of fatty deposits on their hearts and livers.

Don't feed them enough in an attempt to "keep them small" and they will die of starvation less than halfway through their life expectancy.

The size of their cage has NOTHING to do with growth. Hope this helps.

Re: Does cage size effect snake size?

snakes will continue to grow until they die regardless of cage size, to answer the question in the title. As far as "climatizing" that is something different. size of cage you build for a snake depends on type of snake you plan on putting in it. smaller snakes are fine in larger cages if they have enough places to hide. Bigger snakes need bigger cages. A 4x2x1 should be okay for a BCI for it's life, though bigger is better, and the height leaves something to be desired.

Re: Does cage size effect snake size?

No cage size will not effect the size of you snake. Most male BCI can live fine in a 4 foot long cage you may want to make the cage a little taller. My cage are 14 to 24 inches tall but I like them to be 6 feet long or bigger for adult boas.

Just so you know all reptile will grow to there normal adult size the cage size will never make a reptile stay smaller. You can feed it less so it will grow up slow and stay smaller longer but this is not healthy to do to any reptile.

Take care
Tom

Re: Does cage size effect snake size?

I haven't heard that Beardies stay the size of their cage, either. My friend rescued a beardie recently that was stuffed in a ten gallon tank, and she was large enough she could barely turn around, let along have room to get away from her heatlamp if she wanted.

Snakes will grow the way they're supposed to grow, and as a keeper you're expected to provide for the animal and it's needs, rather than expect the animal to provide for what you want it to.

Re: Does cage size effect snake size?

Cage size does affect reptile size but not in the way most people believe.
A cage too small will lead to stress, nose rubbing, deformities, loss in appetite, a weaker immune system and many other health problems making the reptile unhealthy not so much prohibiting growth but definitely affecting it.
I have found the opposite to be true as well. Every time I switch a reptile to a large enclosure their appetite, growth and activity goes through the roof.
