Radiant heat panels
If you use em. Can you please post where you place your probes for them?
Preferably if you dont place em on the floor. I dont have any boas, i keep bloods. But snakes of our size laying on top of a probe wouldn't be good! Or in the event water was spilled, or if it was pooped or peed on.
The panel would run full blast. And in my eyes, be unsafe.
So if you use em. Can you post up how you have it mounted?
Im on ball-pythons. And bloodpythons. And have been lurking on here for a little while. Hopefully i can learn some stuff and help out where i can!
Thanks in advance!
Trevor

Re: Radiant heat panels
All my snakes are arboreal, so my probe location wouldn't help you. I'm sure someone with ground pounders will be along to help you out.

Re: Radiant heat panels
Ground pounders haha.
Yeah the probe locations would be a little different wouldn't they.
Thanks for the reply. Hopefully someone chimes in.
Thanks anyways!

Re: Radiant heat panels
Some folks, like myself, like the probe to be where the snake is going to be. In your case that would be the floor of the cage. You can also hang the probe from the ceiling of the cage right next to the panel and get measurements there.

Re: Radiant heat panels
I hear ya. But blood pythons will end up weighing alot. As with boas.
So say a 20 pound blood python laying on top of a probe wouldnt be good.
Ive currently got my probe halfway between the RHP and the floor. Its set at 82 and i get 86 on the floor and 80 on the cool side. Works good except if my room temp goes up. The RHP has to work less and the hot spot goes down. Room cools down, hot spot heats up.
Im just trying to get an average of what everyone does. I appreciate the reply!!!
Thanks!!

Re: Radiant heat panels
Well, one thing you can think about is that even though your snake may weigh 20 lbs., the whole weight of the snake won't be on the probe. Your snake won't crush the probe. Only a part of its weight will actually be on the probe and the fact that its body conforms to the shape of the probe limits its pressure as well. Its not the same as laying a 20 lb. brick on the probe.
I do understand what you mean by the temperature changes. I have encountered the same problems at times. The only solution I've found is putting the probe where the snake is.

Re: Radiant heat panels
Yeah im not worried about the snake damaging the probe. Just him/her laying on it. And making the panel run full blast. Which could end up burning them. Worst case scenario of course.
Or being on the floor. A big lump of poo or urates could keep the probe cool long enough to heat the cage up pretty good.
Thanks for the reply!!! I wanted to say i wasnt worried about the probe itself. Just them laying on it.
Your way does get the best results hands down. I just find it to be unsafe for my animals. Thats why im trying to work it another way.
Thanks again!

Re: Radiant heat panels
I have 3 RHP's in 3 cages that I purchased from RBI. I have the probe zip-tied to the rear wall of the cage with the end of the probe half way down the wall.

halfway down the wall doesnt give a very accurate reading of what the temp are going to be where the snake is lying

Re: Radiant heat panels
The snake's overall body temperature is going to change with the environment. So even if the snake is laying on top of it, it might get a few degrees hotter but the thermostat will be reading the snake's body temperature. Which is going to be fairly close to it's environment.
