I read the caresheet talking about BK and a review on the Proexotics webpage a couple of weeks ago. Everyone was saying that its totally safe for both you and the animal, saying that you can spray it directly on the animal (in an enclosed tupperware no less) and that there are no worries about your own safety. Once I recieved the cans I ordered though it was a different story. The warnings on that stuff are pretty serious. So I'm wondering, before I even try this stuff, do I really have to worry or is it really ok?

BlackKnight and Provent-A-Mite (or Sawyer's) are different and have different active ingredients. Most instructions I've read about PAM/Sawyer's say NOT to use it directly on a snake and to let the enclosure air out for a couple of hours before putting the snake back in.
BlackKnight's active ingredient is not Permethrin, it's something else I can't pronounce. I've read directions for BlackKnight on several different sites that say it IS safe for use, even directly on the snake.
I have a can of BlackKnight but have not had the need to use it so I can't speak from experience, I've only compared the label of it to that of Sawyer's... The thread Constrictor_BO posted the link to is mostly talking about PAM/Sawyer's...

I've used BK on several occasions and never had any trouble with it! And Yes just like you've read put the snake in a tote and fog him up just don't do this to very young snakes! And also I've heard not to use it on lizards! Or you could order some of this stuff and see how it works. The guy that runsthis reptile shop that carries it swears by it! He says it kills mites on contact and no I'll effects to other animals (Tarantulas, Scorpions) in the same room! Click the link and go to Reptile Relief.

There are dozens of zoos and professional breeders who use black knight whenever needed, and so far I have not seen any (reported) incidents where BK was thought to be involved in the problem.

Yeah OT, the thread I linked to talks about them all. I have black night here but have never used it so I cant comment on it. Maybe this other thread will give him more options to chose from and give insight on them all.
I did spray the substrate on one snake I got in that had mites but there again I have never sprayed the snake directly. Never liked to put anything like that on the snake directly.

Yep, seen that BK was mentioned. Just figured I'd point out the difference in ingredients and that they have different recommened methods of use. Of course, none of this is from experience, just from all the reading I did when I found my first couple of mites.
The only method I have used that would NOT recommend is using mineral oil... ugh... (that was before my BK came in)...

I swear by Black Knight.... BUT I use it as a pre-treatment not as a cure. I treat everything that could hold mites (not including live animals) prior to bringing it past the garage in our house. If it is wood, wood fiber, or porous and is destined for the snake room or a cage I treat it. If it is plastic I wash and soak it first.
I saw two tiny white bugs in one cage when I first started using Repti-bark, since then I have been doing the treatment before things come in the house and I have yet to see a single bug in any of the cages!
Yes I go overboard but I have never had an outbreak of mites and do not want to have to deal with one!
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I have not used Bk at all here. I only know of one person that has had a MAJOR problem using bK also. Contact Joltman for info.. it was him. I beleive that he even lost a VERY expensive snake from using BK possibly [ If I am not mistaken that is]

That is how I do it also, anything coming in or going out of the snake room gets a blast first.
props,cages,bags,hooks,tongs,buckets.
Usually followed a few minutes/hours later by a good scrubbing.
I only occasionally use it on live animals, and then, only let the animals have only a few minutes of exposure to it.
But I have never lost any animal as an apparent direct result of using BK.
