I was trying to clean some mites off of my snake, she is (was?) a baby red tailed boa, I'm certain i was being very gental.
While i was doing this she, very quickly, stretched her mouth very wide, then went stiff as a board. she hasn't moved in the last 10 minutes. normally I'd just assume she had died but i didn't think she would go stiff instantly.
she hadn't eaten in about 2 1/2 weeks, over the last week shes been going through a shed so i thought that was the reason she may have not been eating.
I'm pretty sure shes dead I should stick to chia-pets.

In the future pick up a mite killer such as "Black Knight" or "Provent a mite" to remove them. I honestly do not know what could have caused her to go stiff, leave her in her tank over night as usuall and see what happens in the morning. How are the cage temps, humidity, and lighting set up?

Also where did you get the snake and for how long have you had the snake ? Have you noted whether the snake is actually breathing or not as yet ?

I was removing the mites using the oil that was suggested on this site. She was bought at petco, I have called them and they told me that the entire lot they had was infected with mites. When i looked under her neck area (from her head to about 2 inches down) there was loose moist flesh around where most of the mites were. Is this my fault? considering she died in my hands.

Bought from petco, had mites, entire collection has mite, stiff paralysis, dehydrated. Sounds like IBD or another icky disease like that. Tell petco that they sold you a sick snake and you want a cash refund... not a replacement animal. I do not think you had anything to do with the demise of this animal.

If the snake really is dead, throw away everything in your tank that is replacable and wash everything else with a 5% bleach solution before trying another boa or python. Oh, and BTW, Welcome to RTB.net.

I don't think you had anything to do with the death of your snake. Like the others said, PetCo shouldn't be allowed to sell animals. However, they told you their whole collection was infested with mites, go back, tell them what you really think about them, and demand a refund. I've always known a lot of people here never buy animals from them. They don't have the experience nor the requirements for reptiles. Just my opinion.

Yeah what they all said..Sorry about your loss. take him back, get a refund and then find a breeder on RTB or someone who breeds and get another one from them. I would never buy a snake from petco or any other pet store. Good luck and just ask around on the forums someone always seems to have babies for sale.

It definatly is not your fault, go with Morti and get a cash refund back. Don't let this experience get you down, next time go to a reputable breeder and buy an animal you know is going to be healthy. Check out this Link for a few nice Colombian Redtails that are also hets just in case you decide to breed him/her in the future. There are a lot of good places out there, just post the name of the place and chances are someone here has delt with them and can give you some feedback.
