Re: Cuvier Problems??

Are you referring to a Cuvier's dwarf caiman?

Re: Cuvier Problems??

Since I don't think you're keeping Cuvier's Beaked Whale! I assume you have Paleosuchus palpebrosus?
.
It's tough when an animal suddenly changes habits for no obvious reason.. I helped a friend with a similar problem recently (with a dwarf Caiman).. my advice was to make sure the water was not too hot and place food out of the water near the basking spot. It worked for him.
.
Good luck.

Re: Cuvier Problems??

If you haven't done so already read our Captive Croc FAQ at:
Crocodilian Captive Care FAQ (Caiman, Alligator, Crocodile)

What are your enclosure temps (air, water & basking spot)
What are you feeding your caiman
I would assume that your caiman is wild caught, if this is the case has it been treated for internal parasites?

Re: Cuvier Problems??

Out of curiosity and if you don't mind me asking, what farm did he come from? I'd be surprised if anyone is breeding Cuvier's Dwarf caimans on a commercial level due to several reasons. They have very little commercial value. They're illegal to keep as pets in many if not most states. And most of all, they are very inexpensive to import.
It's ok to give an occasional raw meat treat, but whole prey items are the best.

Re: Cuvier Problems??

We really need pictures and husbandry description if we are to help. Also I heard most Cuvier's only get about 3-5 feet, perhaps yours is mature now and it's metabolism is slowing down.
