I just purchased my first boa.
I purchased this beautiful animal to be a family pet, but there is a strong possibility I will want to breed her down the line. She is very pretty!
With that in mind, I have an opportunity to buy an equally impressive male but they are from the same litter. I don't know if I could or should breed them???
I have to make a quick decision, he is the last male!

Thanks,

JimmyG

some people do breed siblings , some don't. Kind of a personal decision really, but from what I know there usually arent any genetic problems unless you keep inbreeding down the line.

I have a sibling pair and was told that breeding one generation of siblings was normally ok but successive generations will cause problems....I would intuitively expect probablems with inbreading but don't know for a fact.

As I was telling Jimmy in e-mail and just to pass it along for everyone else, Karen and Guavagrower are 100% correct... You can do it without any forseeable problems. Inbreeding happens with boas in the wild with no ill effects. If you look at the dog market, you can see genetic weaknesses that occur through excessive inbreeding, but for the first couple of generations it should not be a problem.

YUP..Exactly as I have heard it also. Which is one of the reasons you find breeders looking to add to their gene pool on occasion.

Ok, going off the fact that I raise/show/breed dogs (rabbits, horses, dairy goats, etc), inbreeding is something only a very experienced breeder should undertake. Linebreeding is safer IF you know exactly what you are doing. With as many nice, inexpensive and unrelated males out there, why buy a sibling for breeding? If the breeder you are purchasing them from is very knowlegable and willing to educate and quide you, than yes, maybe it's an option. Otherwise, I would try to find a 'less related'(uncle, maybe) or unrelated partner for your snake. Do your research first, you have a few years to learn before jumping into anything as complicated as breeding. I do practice line breeding with my dogs, smae with my other animals, but before all that, I have gotten mentors, read books gone to school (college), and ask as many questions as I can possibly think up before ever putting two animals together for the purpose of breeding.
Best wishes to you & Welcome to RTB!
