There's probably not much I can do about
this situation but I thought someone here may
have a nifty idea I hadn't thought of before.
It's getting into summer here and things are warming up.
Got any ideas on providing a cool spot in a cage???
The daily temp. (outside) is about 93F, overnight 80F,
the humidity a lovely 65-75%. The house stays a few degrees
warmer,(enclosure is same as ambient house temp.).It's an open
airy house (no a/c), and the weathers only going to get warmer and wetter.
I'm not overly concerned about this, the snakes seemed to cope fine last wet season
but I thought you guys may have some tips that may make them a little more comfortable.
Any ideas??

Me and cold don't see eye to eye either Stormy .
Well there's a couple of reasons I don't feel a/c is the answer.
1/ I hate the stuff.
2/It's a rented house .
3/It wouldn't be real effective. It's an old timber place ,the design
is too open to the outside to retain the cool air.
4/Dollars .
I'm looking for a fairly simple idea.

Sounds like a really cool place!
You ought to take and post some pics of it.
As far as simple easy ideas, other than a fan I have not a single one. Sorry
I dont know if something like this is feasible but people out in the Southwest US use a thing called a swamp cooler to cool thier houses. It requires relatively low humidity to function and is somewhat inexpensive..... here is some info...
www.usatoday.com/news/science/wonderquest/2001-08-22-swamp-coolers.htm
www.jbmailroom.com/swamper/
store.yahoo.com/atrendyhome/aircooler.html
Dont know if any of that will help but at least you can now say that you have read about swamp coolers

Thanks Stormy, but evaprotive coolers just don't work
in this climate ,too humid. The humidity will average about
80% in a months time with days reaching 95% not unheard of.
Thanks for trying.

Ben in your situation,(and I agree with stormyva)It does sound cool, although maybe its just cuz we know your in Oz. I would put a fan in the room and give daily cool water in a big bowl. The water temp wont climb as fast in a large bowl. Obviously you can shut the heaters off. Don't put ice cubes in the water, may make it too cold. Just give the snakes a cool spot to retreat to. they may start soaking allot but they know what their needs are. Mostly they will probably curl around the water bowl.

Thanks Ed!
I will try upsizing the water bowls ,though in two years have'nt seen them
soak once .The bowls are big enough for them to now but maybe a larger one
will give them more incentive to go for a dip!

Man I like the heat but I'm not a masochist!
We don't even own any heaters,
It's hot enough as it is.!
btw. the snakes are showing no signs of lethargy or dehydration in case you were
wondering.

You could also use a "California Aircondition". On the hottest days, get a standard oscilating fan and put a bag of ice right behind it. It will draw the air past the ice and blow air that is approximately 5-10 degrees cooler than the ambiant air temp. The down side is you end up going through a bag of ice every day, but if the condition is only for a few weeks, this may be a good way to keep both you and the herps cool.
