Help!!!

I just built a new habitat for my red tail boa. He is 3 years old. All he does is get underneath the bedding and sleep all day. Sometimes he comes out to check things out but goes back underneath soon after. He is 3 years old, got him in december, he hasnt eaten since november, and he hasnt shown any interest in food yet. Whats going on with him?

Re: Help!!!

Some boas like to burrow. There's no telling for sure why it's doing that. One trick to help deter the snake would be to place newspaper on top of the substrate for a few days and let the snakes weight compress the substrate underneath without disturbing it. Once the bedding is pressed, the snake will have a harder time digging through it. Granted it doesn't really stop him, if he wants to burrow, but the lack of opportunity may distract him.

As for the feeding troubles, we would need more info on the situation to be able to give you an accurate response.

What are you feeding it, mice or rats? Frozen/thawed, Pre-killed, or live?

How often are you attempting to feed it?

Is the snake active when out of the cage? Strong and responsive?

When was the last check-up?

what are the temps? Humidity?

...oops...it took me too long to submit this...sorry for repeating you, Bigred and Louise.

Re: Help!!!

The burrowing sounds completely normal. There is always a little stress when they are getting used to their new surroundings. Barring any major health problems, and if temps etc. are good, he could just need more privacy. Please post a pic of your set-up. Make sure he has one or two hide boxes and plenty of foliage for privacy. After that, cover part of the tank floor with newspaper (over the substrate). Leave a warm thawed rat on the newspaper for him at night when it's dark. Make sure he sees it and smells it (you can warm it under the heat lamp for a few seconds. The rat should be somewhere near where he can see and smell it. Cover his cage with a towel or something so he has lots of privacy. Turn out the lights and leave the room. You can leave it in there overnight. It's important that the rat not be near any substrate that he can drag it into. You don't want him to swallow any substrate with the rat.
