Custom Cage
well, i am currently looking into building my 2 pet snakes a new housing facility, and was concerned as to if there are any certain types of wood that i should avoid using.. i have the construction layout already in mind, and will post pic's as i make progress.
i currently own a Jungle carpet python, and a Bci that will be calling this enclosure home.

Re: Custom Cage
Cedar is bad and I heard pine when heated can releases sap from the crevices. We use MDF board, but it has to be lined or it will swell as soon as it gets damp.

Re: Custom Cage
Yeah use MELAMINE or MDF, then line the inside with some sort of laminate and seal it for water proofing, i am going the same route next week. I have 2 BCIs; 1 BCC(Guyana) and a Bearded Dragon and im going to construct a 4 high enclosure rack!!! SWEET!!!! I'm going to pretty much stack 4 4'x2'x2' enclosures only thing im worried about is heating them all if they're stacked since they aren't in a dedicated reptile room with high temps and humidity....maybe some kind of side mounting heat emitters? any suggestions?

Re: Custom Cage
What about using the spray on silicon sealant every so often to help with waterproofing? Is this harmful to the snakes?

As long as you give it plenty of time to cure, then no. But doing it every so often will require taking the snake out for several days. And that's not something that you wanna be doing that often. Too much stress on them.
.
Seal it once, do a good job, and be done with it.

Re: Custom Cage
To add to Brandon's comment seal it once then put the heat lamps in and let it sit for a few days. The heat can make the wood expand over time releasing fumes. So don't leave the cage cold and turn on the heat right before you put the reptile in.
