Yes, pine can be bad. It contains oils that can cause problems for your herps, similar to cedar but not nearly as strong. Throw down some newspaper for now, return the bedding to the store and exchange it for aspen.

A few here will treat the bedding before it ever enters the enclosure. They sprinkle it with SevinDust or spray it with one of the mite sprays, let it sit for a while and then put it in the enclosure. Hopefully those people will step forward with their ideas....

Send dad to Lowes or Home Depot next time...you can get a bag you can barely carry of Cypress Mulch for 2 bucks there. I had a mite outbreak once about 10 years ago from Cypress and quit using it but recently have discovered the joys of Sawyer's Tick Spray / Proventamite...and once again enjoy the fine luxury of large bags of cheap but natural looking bedding.

I use repti-bark and in some cases coconut fiber (if I need high humidity). As a precaution I always spray with Black Knight before putting any of my snakes into the cages. Provent-a-Mite and other sprays work fine also. (I opted for the Black Knight as it was around $13 from www.reptilebasics.com and Provent-a-mite is $23 a can from the local pet shop.)
Next go round I am going to go Julius's route and go with the much less expensive cypress mulch!

just a quick note about sawyer's tick repellant. You can get it at walmart for around $6 and it works wonderfully. I won't use anything else

Yes they treat it. Most of them either bake it in the oven for a little or spray it with Black Knight, Provent a Mite, or Sawyer's Tick Spray and let it set awhile before putting it in the enclosure. Don't know how deep everyone puts it, but I go about 3" with Aspen.

Go buy you some Cypress Mulch from Lowes. I just bought some today to stock up on. Buy a can of Black Knight from http://www.proexotics.com/supplies.html
I buy a bag and will treat it that way when it's time to clean I have mite-free bag of cypress mulch. Here are some benefits it holds hummidity well, looks better then anything out there, and it's cheap. I would pay 25 dollars a bag for that stuff. I almost forgot it smells real good. I don't know what else is even close to as good. All I know is I hate all the other stuff.
