Anaconda with Blister disease and scale rot
I took in a young anaconda a week or so ago and he is in horrible shape.I took him to the exotic vet that I have worked for and used over the last few years.
He has a severe case of scale rot on the lower portion of his body(it has improved a great deal since I got him home) and he has blister disease and the worst case I have ever seen in my 13 years experience(The blisters were in his nose, mouth and covering one eye,as well as the entire underside of his body).I have been using panalog cream(I also have neosporin w/o pain releiver) and peroxide twice daily as directed.I have been gently and carefully piercing the blisters and absorbed all fluid with cotton and then "doctored" the areas(I typed this treatment process out of the order in which I do it,but you get the idea).
In his cage at this time is a small water dish, paper towels and a hide and nothing else.
I am looking for any tips and suggestions that you all might have to help me make this guys healing process quicker and get him on the road to a better life.
I understand that you all might jump to the conclusion that I am an inexperienced keeper or that you might have the urge to "lecture" me on the dangers of keeping anaconda's.I am always open to constuctive criticism but this is not needed in this case. I need your help in saving this snake.I brought him home because the only alternative was to leave him there to suffer and then die and to me that was not an option.I do not intend on keeping him permanently but I am keeping him until he is completely healed and eating etc. Then I will take on the task of placing him in an appropriate home.
If you have ANY advice or tips and tricks to help, please post it!!I am appreciative of all the help I can get.
Thank you so much!
If I left out any info that is needed please let me know and I will supply everything I can about him.

Re: Anaconda with Blister disease and scale rot
Bless you, Angel.
I didn't think 'condas got scale rot, on account of the semi-aquatic thing...if the previous conditions were so bad that it did, you have done a truly good thing. I honestly don't have a clue about the blister disease. You've already taken him to the vet, which is always a good first step. I know you want the best for this critter, too, and when adoption time comes, you know enough not to hand him off to some joker.
You have my best wishes. Sorry I couldn't be more help with the actual care stuff, but hang in there, and keep us posted.

Re: Anaconda with Blister disease and scale rot
Rev,
Thank you so much! That really means alot to me.
I will only adopt him out to a highly qualified/experienced/capable and well known/respected individual.I do not mind keeping him for a spell to make sure I find him the right home with the right person.
I am not sure if scale rot in captive conda's is rare or not,but he has it
Thank you again for your post!

Re: Anaconda with Blister disease and scale rot
Ok...he is a green, about 3 -3 1/2 feet(give or take a bit),I say "he" but actually it is unsexed, temperment is pretty good right now...but that could be because he is so ill.It has bitten me more than a few times but since the third day it has not even offered to bite me.Absolutely gorgeous animal! The markings and colors are fabulous. At this point there are a few places that were very bad and sores had formed before I got him and have since scabbed over and are looking better.
This anaconda is quickly winning me over.It gives very little fight when I am treating it now,the first few days were difficult. Now he lies there for the most part and it is moving about a little more in the cage,so I am hoping that he continues to improve. He has will to live, that's for sure!

Re: Anaconda with Blister disease and scale rot
Hey Angel..Panalog should do the trick, it's basically a neomycin ointment (antibiotic). It will be stronger than your typical home remedy of Neosporin in this kind of treatment.
He will need to stay warm and dry, untill they heal, and a 50/50 hydrogen peroxide solution applied to the blisters will help some as well, if you want to go that route.
He got scale rot like that because of the bacteria leftover from dirty water and caging in his old home, not from being in water itself. Since Anacondas love water, you have to keep their water fresh and clean all the time, which apparently the old owner didn't.
He's in a great home now
Has he eaten yet?
