Hello,...I need urgent help.. My Columbian Boa, "Googy" has protruding specticals!! His eyes are totally clouded over and I need to talk to someone who knows what this may be. The vet here said to put Neosporin around his eyes and wait til he sheds but you can see little capillary-type vessels within the clouded eyecaps. THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL SHED PHASE...THIS IS NOT AN OPAQUE THING. This has cause him total blindness and has been this way for over a month and a half now. there are no other good vets here. I don't want to lose this snake! I love him so much. He was my first snake and now I own 23!
I hope someone can help!
ps...note...the eye area is LARGE and looks like it will bust open but mostly brownish-white were you can't see his pupil at ALL.
I know quite a bit about snakes but looks like I don't know enough! I'm embarrased and need some professional advice or someone who has seen this in BOAS!
MUCH APPRECIATED. KATHYP kats page

Sounds very possibly like multiple retained eyecaps but difficult to say without seeing it first hand, do you have anyway to get a good clear pic of the eyes posted?
For the capilary things, try this, raise the humids, misting him several times a day and possibly a soak for about 30 minutes to an hour.
My best guess now will be the capilary things are wrinkles from the retained eyecaps or just being too dry.

I have never seen anything like what you are describing but I am sure that Eddie is right about the multiple eye caps... and they may be infected.
Eddie may correct me on this but you may want to try a triple anti-biotic in addition to the soaking to kill any infection and keep the moisture in so that eye caps can be shed.

I love this site already. Yes, I am new. I am a regular (sort of) by the name of "kathtus" on Bob Clark's site.
I recognize Julious Squeezer. Good person.
What I forgot to mention is (and I doupt, seriously, that they are old retained eye caps) that they were clouded in a different sort of way as opposed to old eyecaps or similar. This is something I've never seen and it PROGRESSED over a week to a cloudier and cloudier state. I will make the effort to buy film today and post a picture of Googs.
Your're right...a picture in this case will help.
Thankyou everyone for your help and thankyou for welcoming me. this is a wonderful site and I am proud to be a new member!!
ps...it will take a few days to get the picture disk so i'm guessing 2 to 3 days. but please come back and take a look! much love kathy P

Any way to do one hour photo?
If it's really bad then time is of the essence!
How old is the snake?
Any other problems such as mouthrot, head injuries etc?

Hi Kathy!
Welcome to redtailboa.net!
The following link will take you to a list of vets in the state of oregon. You might find somebody local with the knowledge and experience that you are looking for.

The best i can tell you is you described "protruding specticals" and that it is large and looks like it is about to bust open... It sounds to me like the snake has fluid behind his eye caps. This is a bad state of affairs that is usually caused by a bacterial infection. I had a snake in which this happened once and my vet drained the fluid and send a sample in for lab testing. Turns out it was full of staph bacteria that was succeptable to claforin, batryl, and a handfull of other antibiotics. After a full round of claforin, the problem never recured.
I would HIGHLY reccomend finding a vet who knows what they are doing and having them do the above. This could save your snakes eyes.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

Hello to a friend in Louisville. I am also from Louisville and grew up in the East end. Also lived in St. Mathews. Ballard..
Anyway, Googy is about 3 and half yrs old. He is in good health otherwise. I attended a reptile show over the weekend and a friend said there is some kinda cannal from thier mouth to their eye area. Perhaps Googy had a piece of bark with bacteria on it and it affected both his eyes. Thanks so much for the vet info. there is one in Beaverton that I am going to tommorrow morning. I'll post what the vet said.

Sorry i have never run into what your describing I beleive from what you are saying. Definately sounds like a possible infection like Morti has said though. Also this snake definately needs to be seen by a qualified vet also. Let us know what goes on with the appt. too.

Hi Kathy!
I am not from Louisville, but it is my current place of residence.
I live in St. Mathews, BTW. (It's a small world after all...)
