Cool Pre shed?? OR.....???????

Stats: (BCI male, less than 1 yr old, temps are 87 and 77, humidity is 55%, he feeds every Sunday on a medium fuzzy mouse, normal feces and urates so far.)

OK, so on to the ??problem?? yesterday I pulled him out of his cage and played with him for about 40 minutes (he is so UNBELEIVABLY tame and friendly!) and noticed that his back, right along the spine felt almost waxy, kind of tacky feeling. Now I'm assuming this is probably pre-pre shed, but his eyes are still crystal clear, and his colors look normal. So, on to the question, how often do BCIs shed, and if it's not a shed, what else could it be?

Thanks! And BTW, as a new boa owner, I have to say that this site is an AMAZING help to new herpers!!

Rob

Re: Pre shed?? OR.....???????

I have noticed that I can always tell when a snake is going to go into blue by the way it's skin feels. I don't know if I would describe it as waxy for tacky, but I can absolutely tell well before the eyes cloud. The best advice I could give you is... see if it goes into blue within the next week, and that will tell you if you are right.

I have found that boas shed at different rates throughout their lives... more frequently as they are younger and less frequently as adults. I would guess that between 5 and 8 weeks would be about right for a (roughly) year old boa.
