i just fed pre-killed
it was actually alot harder than i thought to kill a rat. i snapped its neck. but the feeding went a lot better than the last time. one question is i used a screwdriver shaft to pin the rats head down at the base of the skull and gave its tail a quick jerk upwards. the rat went limp at first then he started to twitch a bit. please tell me those were nerves. im hoping it was painless.

Had to be. If the neck was broken, there was no path for the brain to control movement.

all i can tell you is that it gets a lot easier. the first few rats i killed made me shake for at least 10 minutes. yes it probably was nerves. i just grab the rat by taill and slam it on the floor or hard surface.

I just grab them by the tail and whack their heads on any solid object. I usually feed f/t, but I have on occasion gotten a live one and then pre-killed it for safety.

Whacking their heads sounds brutal but it's the least painful way to go besides gassing them with C02. Blunt force head trauma knocks them senseless...They will only ever feel any pain if they recover. Ever been knocked out in a car wreck or something? "I saw lights heard tires squeel...next thing I remember was waking up in the hospital with a headache..." The actual impact is never remembered...Just make sure they don't wake up.
