Dear all, just got back from Hamm, DE, where I have been lucky enough
to find a wonderful peruvian redtail - absolutely amazing pattern and
color - extremely calm and docile - there.
Back to Italy (where I live) the animal started showing an extremely,
never-seen-before, hyper-aggressive behaviour. And I am quite puzzled.
I am having some *serious* problems with him, and so if there is
some redtail breeded with good experience out there willing to help,
please e-mail me at cars@bio.unipd.it -
Be sure I'll find a way to thank who will help me with this.

Well, it was a long trip for him and it prolly stressed it out pretty badly!
Give it a two week period where you do NOT handle except to spot clean and add water etc.
Put a towel up as a blind on his tank during this time so he can't see out.
Also, be sure his temps and humids are correct.
You can also wear a t-shirt for a day, then put it in the cage with him so he will get used to your smell.
One question I have is how big/small is it?
Also forgot to say, Welcome to Redtail!

The peruvian is 60-70 cm long, and has been sold to me as
"captive bred" - even if the owner didn't want to tell me
WHO bred him actually.
Anyway, yes, the snake went a long trip (about 1100 Km
from Hamm to Padua) - the bad temper went out after
putting him in better humidity/temperature conditions.
He sort of "woke up" ;-/

Ahhh, a little one!
Little ones sometimes have a thing for being very defensive and snappy.
It is about a zillion years of survival training that they all have.
In it's mind you are a predator so it is doing what it can to stay alive.
Normally in the wild there are a number of ways to hide or escape, but in captivity, very few options.
Just give it a chill out period and after that, handle as often as you can, at least 15-20 minutes a day, except right after feeding and the next couple of days after feeding.

You mean the attitude went away, or that's when it started?

No problem!
At least you do spell very well!
Just give the stuff I said a go and see how it does!
Should go well once he's all relaxed again!

hello, firts of all...welcome!!!!
im agree with eddie (and who's not??) also notice that when she snake didnt have the right temperarute, she just couldnt show it true personality, just when she gets warm and more active, starts to be more aggresive
and just give your snake some time, i took me 2 weeks to calm my redtail baby when i got her home, she was very cranky, showing her teeth and hissing al the time, now, shes as docile as the others, dont worry so much

I to bought a redtail boa, surinam this time on xmas eve and she was fine, lovely temper etc etc then feedin was a problem, everything that went in came back up sooo off to the vets we go, treated for parasites temps put up higher than normal to help her along more nutrients added to water and smaller meals given and health on the mend so ol muggins goes in to change water and for the past month I've had the satan of all boas. Mine is a female and females are more highly strung and redtails have a reputation for being stroppy buggers but i just ease my girl out with a glove and once she realises she's not in her tank but is still safe she calms down again, it's all down to perseverance and gentle persuasion. You'll get there eventually it's just winning them round to trust you :0)

give it time
Hi, I´m peruvian and I also have a peruvian BCC. In my experience they are ussually docile but it ultimately comes down to the individual, each snake has its own personality. At first mine was a little nippy but after regular handling it became very tame and now it only opens it mouth to eat. Also what yeto said about snakes showing their true personality when they are under the right conditions is very true. At first she may have seemed tame from the bad or not so good conditions she was kept in. Now you have to make sure to offer plenty of hides for the snake to feel secure and put the cage in a low traffic area of the house so not to add any more stress on the snake. Also no handling for the first weeks and the idea of leaving a used shirt with her can also be effective, after that just regular handling and she will probably chill out and become a wonderful snake.
By the way, congratulations for me peruvian BCCs are the most beautiful of all the true red tails (mine is the one in the avatar) and welcome to RTB, i`m also new here .
