Maybe im just being over paranoid, but last weekend i bought a baby red tail at LLLReptile, took it home and it gobled a pinky mouse up right away. It ate the mouse last saturday (3-23) afternoon. Today (4-1) i tried feeding it another pinky mouse and it has refused to eat it. I tried a pinky rat also with no luck...should i wait a while longer or is this cause to be concerned. His cage has been at a consistent temp all week, is set up almost identical to the one at LLL and i dont see any mites or anything. I just dont wanna lose the little guy, he is an absolute joy to have and is by far the most docile snake i have ever owned.

Hi!
What are the exact temps in your tank? (hot/cool side?) has your new baby been
defecating good? Your snake may be going into a shed cycle, and sometimes they
won't eat at that time (two of my four will never eat when in shed). Just wait a few
days and try again, if the eyes are going blue (going into shed) then just hold off and
wait to offer food again after the snake shed.

Have you been handling him a lot? Or is his cage in a high traffic area? All my new guys go into a very low traffic area and I don't handle boas or pythons untill they have eaten for the second time for me. (I don't have to be as paranoid with my rat or king snakes). Boas, especially babies, are very shy animals. Everybody eats them. If you are trying to watch him eat, that could be a problem too. How would you feel if some huge creature was looming over you while you are at your most vunerable. I still have two baby bci that i have to cover to get them to eat. You may try that, or another trick I use, place baby and food item in a deli cup, then place the deli cup into the regular cage and either cover or turn off the lights and leave the room (that includes all other family members, kids, dogs, cats, etc). Then, just relax, he can go without food longer than you or I could. Just make sure he is 100% comfortable with his environment and conditions. Oh yeah, boas are nocturnal, offer food at night, not during the day. Also, don't offer food every day or even every other day, it stresses them. Good luck with your little guy. Right now, stick with whatever he has been eating (either mouse or rat pinkies, not both). When he is more comfortable, then switch him to rats

In this short of a time span, a missed meal is no cause for concern. That being said, a pinky mouse is just a wee bit too small of a meal for a neonate boa.

Well i have been handling him for about 30 mins a day for the past 2 or 3 days...maybe i wont touch him for a few days and try again...ive just never had a snake refuse food (coming from corns and kings) and its making me a little nervous! He did eat last week but what is the longest he should go before i REALLY start to worry? Hes about 18 inches long. He did drink water earlier so i hope thats a good sign!
