Black spots on underbelly of Ball-Python
Hey everyone, I've just noticed my Ball Python acting a little strange lately. It's shedding time so his belly is a little red, but there's black bumps midway down his body which has me concerned. I've read that mites are usually white specks, are these black spots another form of mites or could his skin be rotting?
Species: Ball Python
How long have you had this animal? 2 years
Ambient Temps: 85-90
Basking temps:
Size: 4 ft.
Diet within the past year: Rats
Last time this animal ate: 4 days ago
Frozen thawed/ live/ stunned/ freshly kiled? live
Heat sources (makes and wattage): Heat Lamp
How are you measuring temps? Thermo-strips
Cage size and type: 30 gallon tank
Symptoms: Black spots on underbelly
Can you upload any pics? sure

I need to see some pictures. But from what you have said , I would have to say mites. Look real close under the chin in the fold. Mites love to hang out there.

well the info that you provided is great the best thing you could do is post some pics. It could be scale rot of just a bad shed it all depends on the exact placement of the spots, color and size. upload some pics and we will see if we can help you out.

Snake mites do appear black (most house mites are a grayish/white).

Tampa!
Let me see what I can do about some pics.. I was using bark but switched to aspen snake bedding after noticing the bark was damp from overspill of the waterdish.
I haven't seen too many specs in his water or under his chin(he's a touchy fellow), he's currently soaking in the bathtub and I added a small drop of dishwasher soap because I read that'd help seperate mites from his skin....

Done, he wasn't there for too long..It was actually anti-bacterial hand soap..
His tongue is also a darker color at the end..Not all red like it used to be..

is he ready to shed? I cant tell much from the pics myself maybe someone has a better idea, but if you could take it to a exotic vet that would be the best bet.
