opening snakes mouth?
i just got this dumerils female, and i suspect that she might have the starts of a respitory infection. i wanted to know the correct way to open her mouth so i can examine the inside. any help would be great thanks!

nevermind, i just called my boyfriend and got a walk through. it looks find. i was freaking out because it was slimy, but the slime was clear, and her mouth is white and pink and nothing looks inflamed. anyone want to direct me to pictures of what healthy mouth vs yuck mouth looks like? just so i can keep in mind what to look for in the future??

wait till he yawns.. lol JK Well when i took mine to the vet they had a tool
Its surgical steel and the shape of an old bottle opener, I have one but don't use it till my buddie( vet assistant) helps me out, till i feel comfortable with it. He holds his head and gently puts it in the side of his mouth and turns. The snake does-not try to close his mouth just tries to back away.
If anyone feels this is wrong let me know but from what he does seems to not really bother the snake that bad. |

I don't use a special tool, I just use a credit card or something flat and plastic to stick in the corner of it's mouth and pop it open. Keeping it open can be difficult when the squirm, though.

i was told to use an id and just slide it back, it didnt really hold her mouth open wide, but enough that i could look inside and check out what was going on.

My roommate works at a hosptial and he gets me the longer one sided cotton swabs, works very well IMO |

yea, okay, so its not supposed to be white? its supposed to be pink? ill take a picture when my boyfriend gets home since i dont happen to have a 3rd arm to hold a camera, since opening her mouth is a 2 arm job. thanks for the pics and replys.

use one foot to take the pic and the other foot to adjust the camera. And yes the emeralds mouth was white, he was anemic from all sorts of things. He is a fine shade of pink now like it should be.

hmm. i saw blood vessels, but the mouth color over all was white, and there was a bit of whitish yellow color around her breath | |
