Questions but not sure they go here...
Tonight to start with fed georgia my garter snake(i know not that exciting, but the kids and i really like her lol) She is captive from backyard. She eats great always has. Tonight she downed her f/t pinkie in about 10sec! then to me anyway acted like she was looking around for more. How do you know when they are ready to move up to next size? i alterante what i feed her every about 10 days, feeder fish 3 or 4 depeneding on size, worms(none latley i refuse to buy them but may have to cant dig any up to save my life in my yard), and the pinkies. She would eat more then this if i let her i think. I watched the pinkie go down tonight and really just barely noticed a bulge right as she swallowed it and couldnt tell much at all after it got oh say 3 in maybe down her lenth wise.
Does any of this make sense? LOL
I have other questions about other types of snakes in general and her under tank heater etc.. Is this the place or not? To me this seems more like an emergency or very urgent type thing.

Sorry I dont know much about garters to answer your questions but if you need help this is the right place to post it. Maybe louise or andrea can help on this one I know they have garters?? just thought I would bump this.  |

mine wil only eat worms and he would eat 12 if i let him. i let him have 3 every 3 days. i have tried pinkies and fish and he just wont eat them. truthfully i know nothing about garters, i never wanted one. this little guy got dropped off where i work and the person told my manager to give him to me.

Well i guess im in no mans land. I think she is adorable and very pretty. She is a she thanks to courtney we know now. Worms are her fav but i cant get any dug up lately so i guess will go buy some as she hates crickets. Well thanks anyway. Maybe before too long, i doubt it as no one seems to like garters much, i will be the residence expert on them through continued searching for answers LOL!

Hey sherri! Its Court...(I pushed the hubby out of the seat so I could reply lol)
Refresh my memory...
Did you feed her a rat pink or a mouse pink?
If its a mouse pink, she is probably ready to go up a size in food. I'd probably try a rat pink
If you want her to just be eating rodents, Id feed her about every 5-7 days just the rodent.. A varied diet wont hurt her any, you just dont want to overfeed her.
If you decide to keep doing the feeder fish, and worms as well as the rodent, I would space out the rodent prey to about 10-12 days.
Shes a pretty decent sized Garter, so I think she would have no problem with a rat pink...If thats what you are already feeding her, go with the fuzzys. Small rats I think would still be too big for her.
As far as the UTH..is she still in the 10? If so, Id buy one of those really small UTHs, although for a Garter, their heat requirements arent picky like a boa or BP or something exotic..Room temps would be fine 
I love native snakes for that reason
Has she settled down any??

Also..I can hook you up with a good local colubrid breeder for your morph Corns/Kings if you still are looking..I dont know what he charges, but I will try to get ahold of him.

how would you like a free play mate for your garter? i only use a UTH for my garter. the heat lamp seems to dry garters out.

Oh charlie thank you so much! I have been trying to get it done but just hadnt gotten there. I really really !!!! appreciate it, oh but you left out georgia! she is a she forget the number and a eastern garter snake. can you add that in there?
