I dont know if any of this is a problem but I'd figure I'd ask...

Recently (in the last week) my boa Gannon, who is about 10 months old and 4 feet long, who has been a great eater and seems to be very healthy has begun to change behaviour habits.
For instance, she was never very active during the day, and has now become quite active day and night.
Also, until last week I had never seen her soak in her water bowl and now she spends HOURS in the bowl, submerged totally, except for the tip of her nose.

She is still very easy to handle.
She is eating every 10 days (2 med rats or 3 small).
She has had normal 'movements'.

The ONLY thing that has changed in her environment is that the weather (outside) has gotten warmer, and in turn my house is not as cold, so her heating elements have had to be turned down a bit.

Is there anything I should check for??
I have looked at her and handled her a few times in the last few days, and notice nothing "wrong"...

Can you ease my mind? Or offer suggestions??

THANKS!!!!

Since it is warmer, check to see if your temps have risen any in the cage.
Another idea is you could have rodentia living in the underside of your home or the smell from food is coming in your windows or vents some where.

Another thing to deffinately check is mites.
Snakes do become more active and soak when they have mites.
Look in the water bowl and see if there are any little dots floating in the bottom of the bowl. If so, then ya got mites.

As for the smell of food -- I could see how that do it, and there are rats in a cage (and a pet hamster) nearby -- BUT they have ALWAYS been there -- so why now would that affect her??

AS FOR MITES --
What would I see in the bowl??
I thought of mites IMMEDIATELY but I dont see any on her, and all I see in her bowl when shes done soaking is dirt from the bark...

What do the mites in the bowl look like??
How big? What color??

I am changing over to Aspen next tank cleaning ( I like the look better -- PLUS shes seems to get stained red or brown from the bark)-- I hear aspen is less "parasite prone"...
Is that the case??

IF she has mites, what next??

hey hey! It does sound like mites.. in the water bowl what they look like are little
black dots, about the same size or a lil' bigger than a period ( . ) appears on the screen.
They are usually black. Another good way to check, is take her out and hold her with
your hands wet, rub her all over and then look at your hands.. usually you will see a few
on your skin if she has them. First thing to do if she does have mites..
get her out of the tank and into a nice warm soak. While she's soaking, clean the
tank, throw away all the substrate, wash all the decorations in a bleach-water solution,
if there are wooden hides or branches, either throw them away, or soak in bleach and
water or bake in the oven for about 20 min (at 200-250 degrees I think, be very careful!!!)
Get some provent-a-mite or other mite treatment and follow the directions OR you can
after the soak use mineral oil to "suffocate" the mites on her.. with many of those
meathods, multiple treatments are needed to kill them all. When you put her back in
the tank, use papertowels as susbtrate until all the mites are gone.. that way it is cheap
and easy to replace often and the mites can't hide in any wood chips, etc.
There are some good write-ups about killing mites with various products under the
caresheets section of this site. I've used seven-dust with good and bad results, and
provent-a-mite with good results.

If it is mites I've had success with bleach for the cage and branches and mineral oil for the snake. She could be soaking if she's getting ready to shed. She will shed if she has mites too. That's her way of getting rid of them. Is there any poop in the cage??? Mine will crawl around if there is poop on the bottom buried somewhere. Yet again it could be she is more hungry. Is there another snake in the room??

Well, first, thanks for the responses...

I just took her out of her bowl and ran my hands all over her and I dont see any thing that looks like you've described...
I checked for things floating in the water, and except for what was obviously debris from the bark, again nothing.
Mites would be visible, right? Hisba said about this big --> .

Well if thats the case, then NO, I dont see any....
Should I still treat her as if I see them just in case????

As for poop, I took all of it out yesterday, they are hard to miss, you'd think a german shepard lived in her tank with her. LOL

Hungry? Maybe...Its been 8 days since her last meal of 3 rats....

Yes there is another snake nearby...my BP who is behaving quite normally.

??? Is it possible she just discovered she likes to soak and move around in the daytime ???

Recently I added a climbing/hanging pole (a closet rod [1.5" x 4' dowel really] to her cage bolted from hide to hide, I'll post a picture or two in the next little while....) that she does seem to be rather curious about and does explore alot.
Is it likely that this has given her the confidence to be out of her hide????

I'm just trying to think of why she has altered her patterns so much in the last week........

I think she's crawling around looking for a man. It's spring and love is in the air! That would also explain all the baths and stuff.

Seriously, I think everyone above pretty much covered it...

how long have you had her?? Maybe she's just starting to feel more comfortable and secure now and knows there is no harm. took mine like 6 months before they'd come out in the daytime....

it could just be that she is exploring... just see if she keeps it up..
don't treat for mites if you don't see them, you'll see them if they are there! (hate them! lol)
