Hi. My ball python just shed after a week of being under damp moss. I came home tonight and he had shed, and when I looked at his rear to make sure the shed came off the tail, I saw what looks like dry blood. Not a lot, but it looks as if there's a small dark red spot there. What do I do? Thanks.
Beau

No visible wound. Actually, its a small dark spot, and dry external blood, not much. He's about 2 - 2 1/2 months old, in a 20 gallon tank. I have an undertank heater, and a ceramic element heater. The ceramic heater is plugged into a thermostat. Temperature is set at 90 on the warm side, and the cooler side is usually 5 degrees cooler. Humidity is usually around 55-60, but this week its usually been between 60 and 65 because of the shed. He's spent the week hiding under damp moss until tonight when I took the old skin out. He shed without problem (until I saw the small amount of dry blood). Hide box on both warm and cool side, two water dishes, two peices of moss, and a small tree branch on which he usually basks. Two thermometers and a humidity gauge. Do you think maybe as he shed his tail something went amiss?

It is possible. First, try dropping the high temps down about 4-5 degrees. Also, take a q-tip or swab and wet it. Then rub it around the area where you found the blood. If there is a hole or scratch, you will be able to locate it by doing so. If you find a minor scratch, take the Rev's advice and dab a small amount of Neosporin on the end of a q-tip and cover the scratch with it. Hopefully, if there is a problem, it is something minor. Kepp in mind, I am no expert. But I do have several snakes and I do have a Ball Python. I have seen this before twice. Once, during a shed, the snake got stuck between the hide (was a large half rock at the time) and the glass. As it forced itself through, it scratched its tail. Leaving a small drop of blood on him and the rock. The other was also during a side. One part of the skin was (I'm guessing) not ready to come off at that moment. So when it tried to shed it off, it actually took a piece of the new skin with it. Again, leaving only a drop of blood on himself. One was a Colombian, the other a Ghost Corn. Hope I have helped in a way. Good luck. Keep us posted.

HI BEAU!!!! hehee
You know, Mehen bled a little on his last shed, too. It was right around the spur, so I'm guessing he had a little trouble with it. he looks fine now, active as usual, all over his tree.
If you want to, you are welcome to stop by during the week (Tuesday and later) after work and pay attention to the snakes, they'd like that. I have a feeling Tim won't get them out and socialize while I'm gone...especially Beech. He really needs constant handling or he gets mad at me and tags my nose..LMAO
Anyways, it's good to see you here! If I don't see you sometime today (Saturday), I'll catch you next week. MUAH!

Kewl. well, I took a look at him this morning, and the red was gone, no sign of blood, no sign of wound, cut, scrape, nothing. Strange. I'll keep an eye on him just in case....
