As some of you guys might remember my RTB had mites about 2 months ago....Well after doing the Vet and cleaning and soaking everything for 24 hours....I saw no sign of mites...Well last weekend I feed her a Large f/k rat that looked like it had a few mites on it...by the time I noticed she already had it so there wasnt much I could do but let her eat....Well I go to clean her cage the other day and noticed she had mites in her water tub....I also found 3 in the enclosure..A total of 8 so far....So this leads me to my questions....First how can you tell the difference between the mites that are on snakes and the ones that like warm blood? Also one thing I noticed when I smashed these mites they just mushed, But the ones that she had before poped when you mushed them.....Second thing is should I go through the whole soaking everything in bleach and water and then eveything in the care sheets for her? Sorry so long.....One thing I think im going to do is find another supplier for the Rats. The place I get them from now is filthy and its the same place that gave me the mites in the first place.........Thanks for all the help

I've recently discovered rodent pro.com. They are a godsend. I can't get my snake to eat frozen thawed yet but as soon as i do I'll never go to a store again. They do shipping overnight i think. Rats are individually bagged and if you buy medium, they come in quantity of ten. I think its 11 bucks for the rats and 19 for the shipping. By my count, that's 10 rats for 31 bucks. 3.10 a rat. The pet store charges more than that around here and they are alive, potentially full of parasites, and have to be whacked.. NO PARASITES will live through the freezer, be they mites or internal.

Here's a couple of pics of snake mites, so you get the idea of what they look like when you get them in the collection.
The first one is close to life size and the second is a 500x enlargement.
Any ways, there are many different types of mites, lice etc, that like birds, mammals and such, but most of us jut deal with the snake mite, so thats what we know.
I do believe that most mites will be slowed and stopped with the same treatments, so do what you need to do to eradicate them, usually it takes more than just baths, so check out this CareSheet.

If you're looking for a supplier your best choice would be http://www.rodentpro.com like E-Rock said. You buy then in bulk and save tons of money. F/T is always better than F/K.

Good luck with the eradication of your mites. I use provent-a-mite myself. Others don't touch chemicals with a 10 ft pole. It's your choice how to rid yourself of these annoying pests.

Sorry I think maybe I wasnt clear....I got rid of the mites that I had they have been gone for about 2 months....But I noticed that the rat that I feed her looked like it had mites.....What I wanted to know was how can I tell the difference between warm blooded mites and snake mites? She hasnt been in contact at all with another snake and it was my understanding that in order to get snake mites they would have to come from another snake....Correct?Would there be any way to get mites from the rat? Thanks

Sounds to me like you never actually got the mites completely eradicated the first time.
The pics above are snake mites, if the look any different, then it is some other type but normally, warm blood mites won't go after a cold blooded animal.
I suggest reading about mites and how to deal with them, with something other than just soaking.
Start here, Mites...

If you have mites and want to get rid of them quickly and effectively get yourself some "Black Knight" roach killer!!!
I've never had mites yet (KNOCK ON WOOD!), but I know a guy that had his whole collection infested and in 3 or 4 days the mites were dead and gone with NO ILL EFFECTS to his snakes!
I saw it first hand and I bought some to have here just in case.

.Your snake does not have to come in contact with another snake to get mites. Snake mites only spend about 10% of their time actually on the snake. It's not uncommon for pet store rodents and bedding purchased at pet stores to carry a mite or two.
Also, a good way to know the difference between rat mites and snake mites is if you are getting bitten. Rat mites also feed on humans. Don't confuse this with the psychosomatic itching that we all feel when the little buggers are even mentioned
