One of our members is having problems signing into the site. In the meantime I am posting their problem here for more input in relation to such....this is their email...[minus the log in problem part ]

<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE>my boa ha not shed his tali, the tip about 1/2 in. for the last three sheds. i am getting worried. he seems agitated when i touch it to try to get it off. help.
</BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>

Here's what I have told the person so far...

<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE> OK..I'll fix the sign in problem for you. In the meantime.. Your snake most
likely has a sensitive area where that retained shed is at the end of the
tail area. Such would be due to the shed there. You need to get that off
the snake ASAP. If it is not removed the snake could lose the end of thew
tail. How big is the snake ? How old ? What type also ?
In order to try
and remove the shed off that area, try soaking the snake to get the shed
to moisten up and come off if you haven't already. Sometimes [ long as not
a baby snake] you can use mineral oil to try and moisten that are up a bit
for removal. Another product that may help is the shed-ease stuff found
at pet shops even. A lot of people have used such with success. You need
to GENTLY rub the tail end in a downward motion to try and remove the shed
off the tail. Sometimes you can &quot;grab&quot; the edge of the shed and GENTLY and
CAREFULLY pull the shed off..again downwards toward the end of the tail.
You MUSt be VERY CAREFUL doing this as that area of the snake can be the
outcome of major health issues if you don't do it right. You do NOT want
to &quot;rip&quot; into the snake's skin at all while doing this also. The area is
VERY sensitive !
Your best bet is to see a vet with the snake if you do
not have any experience doing such yourself actually.
Where are you located
? Maybe we have a member that is nearby that could assist you even if needed
that has experience doing this.
Let me know what goes on with getting that
shed off.
BTW.. If the shed is NOT removed, it can actually act like a rubber band
and constrict the tail end thereby leading to non-circulation to the tail
tip, which will lead to necrotic tissue in the area and ultimately to amputation
of the tail. This is why it is IMPORTANT to get that retained shed off the
snake.
I'm going to assume that you are not able to log into the site for
some reason and will change your password to...

In the meantime for you. Let me know what you want for a password actually
and I'll change it to that for you also btw.
LATERS...

</BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>

Anyone got any other ideas that has worked for them at all?

I believe you covered just about everything. Depending on how many cycles this snake has gon through dtermines how difficult it will be in removal of shed vs the possibilty of sloughing off the skin. I think a good long soaking daily, possibly 3x a day may be in order. I would say do that before any attempt at removal was made. Just to get an idea of how loose the shed is. If it doesn't come off easily, i would continue soaking periodically everyday until it does start to loosen. Then, as you mentioned, try to manually remove.

Peace,
Alex

I would go with the soaking technique and try to manually remove it. My royal's recent shed was complete except for the right side of the head. I misted it a few times and took a damp cloth and gently removed the shed. This worked well for me and the eye cap came with it as well. He did state that it has been on through the last three sheds. It might be best to see a vet since it seems he has no experience with this.

HI,
After you fix the tail, Lets talk about humidty in the cage whats the heat are you measurin humidty. I haven't had any shed problems since I raised the humidty in my cages. I actually keep the humidity at 70+ when I start seeing blue and keep it there until they shed..
I really think humidty is extremly important next to heat for good sheds.. Is your ambient
at least 82. MAny cages have really cold spots and really warm spots if the snake tries to thermoregulate he tends to dry out from the really warm dry spot. Che's and bright lights tend to suck the moisture out a cage ...
Work on the humidity.

UMMMM...is that BAD to use mineral oil on babies? I have my RTB and new Burm that I just used that on in a water/oil soak, and the only bad thing I noticed was the thin clear layer of the scales coming off...let me know if I should stop this, and any other side effects or whatnot I should know, so I don't harm them in case they get mites again down the road...THANKS!
