Hi Guys & Gals! Smiles! I have been here, just being quiet...been observing Taboo. Since she ate 3/7 she has been under her flower pot all the time, except for water at night, (I didn't see her drink but the water level goes down). In the last 3 days she has had her nose sticking out and flicking her tongue when I am around. Last nite she was out before dark roaming around and around, up & down for several hours. My questions: She has not passed her last dinner yet??? She has not shed??? Does it sound like she is hungry again??? Should she eat again if she has not passed or shed? I can see her bone structure when she is moving around, is that normal? I don't think shes skinny, I can just see her bone structure, she is 5 " around and close to 4 ' long. Thanks... people! I have not held her yet, she looks sooooo big!

You may have said this in another post somewhere but what is her feeding schedule? How many, how often, and how big? By bone structure do you mean that you that you can see her spine?

Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,She doesn't have a schedule, you see she belongs to my son who has his own ideas. I have convinced him she should eat a least once a month. We gave her 2 big mice but will give her a small rat next time. I guess you could say spine.....bone structure?

Hello!
I feed my 4 foot boa, Eve, one medium sized rat a week. She doesn't appear fat, and she is active, so I think that really works for her. Eve passes her 'dinners' about every 10 days to 2 weeks. I would offer Taboo a small rat this weekend and see how she does.
Sounds like you're doing a good job of snake-sitting!

Don't let her going to the bathroom decide when she should be fed. I would go with one a week.

Diane, a boa that size should be eating an appropriately sized rat every 10-14 days. And honestly, two mice or a small adult rat is probably too small for a 5' boa. A 5' boa can eat large adult rats every other week. You don't need to wait between defectations. It's just like you eat 2-3 meals a day, and you don't always wait for defectations before eating again. Just make sure your boa is defectating approx. every 3-4 weeks (that seems to be the average time for my boas), but they can go up to 6-8 weeks w/out defectating. As for the size of the rat, just make sure the rat is equal to or slightly larger than the boa's widest girth, and for a 5'er that usually is a large adult rat.

Diane, go to Clay English's site (link is below) and take a gander at his "standard feeding table". It should help you out a great deal!

Diane.. A 4' boa will probably take a medium rat fine. The rat should not be any bigger than the snakes girth. Feed it every 10 to 14 days. Once a month is not enough and it will poo when it needs to. Sometimes my snakes go a few days after feeding and sometimes they will not go until the second feed.

Hey Diane go with what the other's here have said she really need's to be eating a medium rat every 2 week's at least! I have a 5 foot Boa that right now get's a large rat every 10 day's! And like Bry said waiting for a poo is not a good thing because snake's will sometime's go for period's of time between defication's, due to growth (may use more of the rat) so step up the feeding and size of the rodent's! To get an Idea of size go to this page and click on medium where it say's view!

Oops, I read your post wrong. I thought you said he was 5' long. I didn't realize you meant 5" around and 4' long. Both my boas are about that big. I would give it a medium rat every 10-14 days, that's what mine are eating.

My son will be coming tomorrow for the race and dinner and the awards...He said he would get a 'small' frozen rat, if they have frozen....If not he will get live and put it to sleep before feeding. Are they harder to knock out than mice? He also asked me how I will feel when he takes it home. But I know I will be more unconfortable as she gets bigger. I should get a pretty frog to watch, Ya think????? Is it ever done...weighing snakes to determine their health? Blah, Blah, Questions, Questions LOL! (I gotta get something so I have a reason to be here with You All, right?!?!?!?!?!?

You are welcome here even without a snake. But there are snakes out there that don't get as big as boas. Ball pythons are nice. Ummm, cornsnakes (they're fast though), their are some nice smaller boas but I am not as familier with them. You know, I bet you would be great with leopard geckos! THey are friendly, you don't have to feed them mice or rats, they come in some beautiful colors and patterns. And they are cute to just watch. I really enjoy mine (actually, s/he's belongs to my 5 yr old). Super easy, super sweet, really pretty. You may think about them.
