Funky smell in cage
Okay, I don't know how to make this smell go away. The cage is made out of wood with a glass front, air vents built in the sides of the walls, with a wooden lid. I'm using reptile carpet. When I got the cage the girl that had been using it hadn't cleaned it. I rubbed the entire thing down with bleach solution like, 3 times. Then, I put a new coat of paint on the wood. Once that dried i wiped it down agian (this whole time I had the lid open for it to air out) and bombed it with lysol and febreeze and let it air out for another week. I scrubbed the carpet with bleach solution and let it air out outside, but the cage still stinks! It's not really a stinky smell though. The girl didn't have it necessarily "dirty" when I got it either. It's a real, real potent musty smell. Like it's half-way clean, but the lid has been closed for a hundred years. I don't think it will hurt the bp I now have in it. I don't think I can get the thing any cleaner. It's definately not coming from any sort of excrement or whatnot, but I really want it to smell right anyways. Any suggestions?

Be careful when cleaning with Lysol. Such cleaning products can leave a toxic resedue, that can cause neurological problems with your snake.
Sounds like the would has some embeded mold. Possibly resealing the exterior and interior is in order. This would include stripping the paint off and using a wood sealant.

conventional cleaners are not a good idea, as Ed mentioned they can leave toxic residues, and may never completely go away.
Unfortunately wood caging, once a degree of stinkiness has been set , wont normally go away without some serious work.
at least in my experience.
I will only use plastic caging now, its sooooo much easier to keep from getting stinky.

Just as a hint, with all my animals (5 cats, 4 snakes, 2 bearded dragons, oh and and my other half) I have found that Natures Miracle works SO well. It cleans, disinfects and is pet safe.

Hmm Batgrrl, I love Natures Miracle for urine odor. I never would have thought of that for snakes.
