My boa has mouth rot...help needed.

Hello. I have a 6.5 ft female redtail and I have been fighting this mouth rot for sometime now. It started out from her rubbing her nose on the screen. I have since upgraded her enclosure (long oeverdoue I know ). I treated it with a 50/50 mixture of betadine and water and it began to clear up quickly. Just before her moved her in to her new cage (was waiting for paint fumes to disappear) she had another bad rubbing episode. Now her mouth rot is back and I fear it moved to her bottom jaw. Her bottom jaw seems swollen and it actually looks like there is a greenish color to her scales underneath. She hasn't eaten in about 3.5 months but still has good body mass.

Should I continue this treatment? There isn't a vet in the area that has much if any experience in reptiles so I feel like I need to play "Dr." here. Any help is appiecated.

If it's getting that bad, she really needs to be seen by a good vet, even if it means driving a ways to get there. If you can tell us where you are from, we may be able to recommend one, or try www.arav.org or www.herpvetconnection.com.

I live in south central Pa.(Altoona) St. College has a vet listed... but was recommended from treating a RI... not real difficult to cure if caught early.

I have a couple leads in the area. I think what I need most is help in getting the mouth open enough to swab it out throughly. That is something the wife isn't ready to try.

You can use virosan to treat it, but if the swelling and "cheese" is really bad then the vet is in order...
