I have em sexed at like about 1-2 weeks of age myself. I think you can do it as early as a day of age though even. The easiest way on a baby is to pop em. BUT ya gotta really know what your doing in order to not hurt em doing it also.

i did it as soon as a day.
with the popping- be very careful! you dont wanna hurt the snake.
the best thing is probing, by someone who knows how to do it properly!!!!
go to a vet!

I would highly suggest not popping the young. I hae heard to many stories of ppl hurting the animals popping them. wait the extra time and probe them please.

I have never probed any herps, but I don't think you have to wait at all, just as long as you use the correct size (please tell me if I'm wrong). probing can hurt snaks also, popping, and probing should ONLY be done by ppl that know exactly what they are doing IMO. -Juggalo

That's right Jug. Either way it is done.. It should only be done by someone who has experience doing such.

I learned to probe (which i don't generally do as i don't see why it's even relevant unless you're breeding) by watching my vet. All ya' got to do watch how its done a couple o' times than maybe have someone present whose done it before. Like i said though, i'm no expert sense i really don't consider it an obligatory necessity, and as such ,have little experience compared to the "pros" out there.

its a little harder to learn than to watch!
it definitly has its own lil' "feel" to it.
especially with carpet pythons- you can rip right through the females like nothin'!!! making them seem like males.
you gotta learn what to "feel" for.
i definitly agree that you dont need to probe if this is your hobby or just a pet or something.
why bother really.
breeders are the ones who should be doing it.

i bought a female that turned out to be a male and the person i bought it from is gonna let me have pick of the clutch on an expected litter here real soon
right now they are pets but will eventually be used in breeding projects so this one must be a female
i already have 2 males i don't want another!

Well i realize you've got to have the feel for it. But i don't think you should just get a set and start sticking every snake you keep. I feel that you should learn, by watching, reading, than, with someone present whose done it before, guide you towards the "way". I wouldn't suggest anyone whose never seen it done to try it at home.

Funny thing is...the actual act of probing is the easy part. The hard part and the part that makes or breaks your probing experience is "How to Grasp and restrain the tail of the snake and keep in inverted". Here are two hints. It helps to have two people. And...babies are by far the most difficult to keep still. Do not ever attempt to probe anything until you have worked closely with someone experienced and have been SHOWN how and then have done it a few times under close supervision.

i'm not going to probe them myself, i don't even have a set of probes yet because i want to learn how to use them properly before i start probing snakes
the question i was asking is how long after a clutch is born should someone EXPERIENCED be able to tell me what sex the babies are so i can pick me out a FEMALE?
i would not myself or let anyone else do anything to an animal that could harm it! ALL of the animals in my home are living the high life, we treat them better than we treat most of the people we know!

And is probing definitive? I've read several stories in the forums where they were probed to be male, then female and then back to male again. Is there an age where probing can be more obvious? Ted was probed to be a female today, but again, he is young, about 5 months. So, I'm still keeping the name until he gets older. Then, maybe it'll be Tedwina! : ) And yes, he was an ARAV vet. He tried both popping and probing.

BTW, Dr. Sean did a good job in probing. We were both holding Ted and I didn't even feel him twitch when the probe was inserted.
(I am soooo tempted to make a joke on that, but I gotta keep it clean. )

sometimes thats the only way your gonna earn.
i learned by reading web pages on it and from books. i also asked julius for a lil' help back in the day. i asked plenty of vets to show me how, but none did- so i took it to my own hands. since then i have correctly and safely probed hundreds of times.
as we all know, there are lots of dog and cat vets out there but few real reptile vets!
i also said i agreed, the regular person who isnt doing anything but keeping as a pet- shouldnt probe just in case they hurt the animal.
but if they wanna learn, there are plenty of well informed webpages out there.
