macklots python
I'm trying to see if you guys can help me. I recently purchased what was advertised as a macklots python. I'm wondering if you can help me identify if it is indeed a macklots or some variation of it. The guy said it is about 2 years old, it is around 4 1/2 feet long and pretty slinder, it has nearly completely white eyes, (and it's not in shed) it's color is almost solid black except down by it's belly where it has some spots of bromn, but for the most part the snake looks black from head to tail. It is also a pretty aggressive snake right now buy the previous owner said that was because it is hungry. It eats very well. The previous owner also said something about it possibly coming off some island making it rare, but I just like the snake so i'm not sure if he was just trying to make a sale or if that part is true. Sorry I can't post any pictures, but I don't have a camera. I paid $50 for it, and I'm mostly trying to see if the guy was being honest about it so I can look up information on it. There really isn't much info on macklots. Why? Anyways thanks for any help you guys can provide based on my description.

well, regardless of what it is, 50$ was a good price.
I could very well be either a savu python (which have white eyes, and sometimes can be very dark)
4.5 feet, at that size, most macklots from the nominate ssp would be fairly tame.
Now a savu would probably be pretty aggressive, I have had a few savu's and all of them were mean, and I have had several macklotts and none of them were mean.
There is one other island race known as "dunns" macklotts pythons, but if you got one of those for 50$ then you got a steal.
I see them for sale for 200$+ depending on who is selling them.
Can you post a pic?
Im guessing you have a savu python based on your description.

thanks for your help. Will this snake ever calm down then or are they always aggressive? Can you also give me some place online where I can research about the savu. Thanks again

I have seen Macklotts go cheap aroun $45-50.00 The ones I have come across had temperments ranging from nippy to all out aggressive, although I did see one once that was somewhat handleable.
A picture would be helpful.
Does it look like this one? (Photo from Glasgow Zoo Site)

Or this one..... (Photo from Whozoo)

I went to your link about savu at VPI and it definately looks just like your bottom photo. It's nearly completely black with white eyes just like that photo. Thanks for your help. So do you think that $50 bucks was a good price for my snake? And is there any way to tell if it is male or female. Thanks again you guys are snake gods!

When Savu's are hatched, they have terra cotta colored eyes and they turn white a little later. I have never heard of another Liasis ssp with white eyes. Are there others Frag? anyone?...anyway Savu's aren't so much rare really as new to the US pet trade. They first imported them here in the late 90s sometime I think and breeding projects have been extremely successful. All the ones I have seen can be quite snippy like an amazon but are much easier to manage once out of the cage and in your hands than an average amazon. Just "BE THE TREE" Let them do their thing and don't clamp down or blow warm air in their faces and maybe you won't bleed so much Good Luck

I guess i've always been unlucky in the savu world.
They all hate me.
but of all the macklots ive had (adults and about.... 48 hatchlings) most were tame after a few months.
my adults were puppies, but the babies, start out pretty sassy.
savu's are the only ones im aware of that always have white eyes, but I have seen some macklots and some dunns where the eyes were pretty pale also. But not near like they are on a savu.
