hmm a nile? good luck with that one ussually a "tame" nile is a sick nile from what i've seen they are a spastic monitor at the least(thats one with a good mood) and of course then you got the bad mood niles that bite and claw at you....
oh ya welcome to redtailboa.net! im sure theres someone here that can possibly give you a few pointers on possibly calming him down a lil

personalities may vary, your results may not be the same as others
ok the disclaimer is out of the way.
Tame Niles do happen, just like Tame alligators exist. can you count on yours being that way ...NO. That cool cheap $20 monitor is gonna turn into a 7' irate feeding machine, that MAY tollerate your presence. Unfortunately people can read 99 different stories of how they don't make good pets, but they read 1 story of a totaly docile animal, and THATS the one they go with.
All I can say is keep working with it, so it gets accustomed to you messing with it. once he gets older your not going to be able to control him if you don't keep up with him. He may NEVER get to be tame and a lap pet, more than likely he wont.
Best of luck with it, dont give up.
Welcome to RTB!!

I know of 2 people with tame niles but about 20 others have monsters. The tame ones were calmer from the beginning from what I am hearing...be very prepared for yours not to calm down....and invest in some body armor

as adorable as Kate (LD's ) nile is I would never bother playing the odds..when so many other monitor species are a sure thing....but in a picture they are really beautiful lizards.

Kate's full name is, "Don't Kiss Me Kate. NO! Not On The Face Kate! No Kate, Please, NO!!" heh She will scratch, bite and tailwhip if anyone tries to touch her.

they can get very large---and they seem so much larger when they are full of that nile persona. But there are some who love those fiesty lizards and snakes so I guess it's all about taste. The thing is it is a commitment because most niles are difficult to place---even the zoos don't want them.
There is someone on this site who recently adopted 2. That member is on another thread....If they become healthy it should be interesting to hear about the stories on cage day LOL

We have one about 8 months old in our Herp collection. When we first got it, we were constantly being bitten, clawed, tail whipped by that tiny little freak. After about 4 months of constant handling between other reptiles, it has stopped biting. However, he still has little man syndrome, posing and tail whipping have continued. Everything takes time, especially when dealing with an animal that has not been in captivity all that long compared to some of the more "tame" monitors.
Good luck with him and keep working at it. I have had a juv. green iguana for almost a year and am barely seeing any improvements in his skittish behavior. It all depends on the animal, and many more varying factors.

iguanas are mean little things. my dad had one for quite a while when i was growing up, just recently died. every time id try to hold it, he bit and whacked me with his tail and it hurts like heck. but if my dad picked him up, he was fine. that was when i decided iguanas weren't my thing :P
