Ok went to the Irving herp show and came back with a buncha new aminals. One is a baby boa and one is a baby ball python. I know I need to quarrantine...but what all EXACTLY does that entail? I have heard a week or two weeks all the way up to quarrantining for like 6 months to a year. I'm pretty sure that the main reasons behind quarrantine are mites and ibd. But ibd can take forever to show signs, and even then the signs can be easily missed. Mites are pretty much a no brainer if you know what you are looking for and how to catch em best ((which I hope I do)). So what is the low down on the quarrantine thing? How long is best? Does it have to be a whole other part of the house or just a different corner in the room seperated. I know to wash hands and arms really well, handle them last of the day, clean their stuff last and with different cleaning materials. What all else is there i need to watch out for or do?

New additions to the family : Colombian rtb ((Storm)), Ball Python ((majik)), Scorpion ((sting)), prairie dog ((unnamed atm)), and a red-eyed armored skink ((Natas))
The skink is named for two reasons: 1) In honor of SHane for creating RTB and 2) my gf said he looks satanic and wanted to name him satan, so I said no...Natas

And Lori the skink is awesome You definitely should get one

Obviously, the goal here is to not communicate what the new snakes MAY have to the current collection. Further, I think the new snakes should be separated from each other as well as the existing collection.

Definitely NOT in another corner of the same room. Preferable at the other end of the house, idealisticly, in a separate building altogether.

Duration: I say minimum 60 days. The state of reptile medicine is such, that disease wise (not parasites) no one is 100% sure what specifically is communicable and how. IBD is a big reason for this quarantine, but as you said, it can be a long period of time before a subject manifests symptoms.

Well, you should quarentine for at least 90 days or so.
But it isn't just for IBD and mites, as many illnesses are transmittable, such as RIs and other infections along with internal parasites and there are different regions for which some come from that they may carry a germ they are resistant to naturally, but the other animals from different areas can get sick from.

I agree with both of these guys...J and Eddie are right on the money. The only thing that I really have to add is that I quarentine mine between 91-180 days. IBD can take forever to present, up to a year in boids. In pythons it is much quicker and in the babies of either species you would lose the animal in six months (most often) if it does have IBD. The thing that I keep in mind is that if one of those animals do have IBD it could wipe out your whole collection! If you ask me it is worth the extra time.

Just my $.02
