Brown thing in mouth that came off w/ a q-tip?
On the right side of female red tail boa's mouth, inside the mouth is a brown thing like this big -- <--- I always feed her seperate from her cage in a big plastic tub, w/ no substrate, and w/ frozen mice. She ate last Thursday only 1 mouse, instead of 2. I figured its cos she was about to shed and she had 2 mice 10 days previous. About a month ago the vet saw her and took a look at her mouth, and was fine no brown thing there. And guess what I just took a q-tip to the brown thing in her mouth w/ a solution of 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% water, and the brown stuff came off! Now nothing is there. What could it be? The reason why I took her to the vet a month ago was her muscle tone was slack but antibiotics helped that. I don't even know what caused her to get that problem w/ her muscle slack in the first place? All you knowledgeable people I really appreciate your insights. Inside her cage she has mostly pet bark with some Kaytee Soft-Sorbent Bedding & Litter. She is having a hard time shedding too, so I increased the humidity and added a heat lamp to her already heated enclosure. Thank You, EA

Can you give a better description of what you removed? ie: hard and crusty, soft, so on.
Pleae tell us more about your set up too....
Snakes age/size?
Cage size?
Hot side and Cool side temps?
Humidity level?
Out of curiosity, what prompted the vet to give the antibiotics? Did the snake show signs of infection or just the slack skin?
Oh and welcome to RTB?

The brown stuff was soft, mushy easy to remove. The red tail boa is about 11 mos old is my guess. She is 2 feet long. The aquarium is 40 gal. long. The cool side of the aquarium is around 75 degrees since it is summertime, and the warm side is around 85 degrees due to an ambient heating pad on the side of the aquarium, and can be even warmer if the red tail boa wants to rest over the under tank heating pad. I don't know the humidity level but I mist the cage daily and I also soak the red tail boa in a little bit of water in the bath occasionally. The vet said she was well hydrated. We were afraid she had a fatal virus cos she was acting weird with not curling up like a snake does and not having a tight grip. The vet said we could give antibiotics a try but was afraid it was a virus, but now her grip is as strong as ever and she seems normal after she got antibiotic shots. The red tail boa did not show any bruising under the belly that would indicate an infection according to the vet. Thanks! I'm planning on getting her a new enclosure within the next 4 months.

Could it have been a little bit of pet bark she picked up while possibly rubbing around in the substrate?

First, not to criticize, but you should be feeding at least rat pups. My 6month old Colombian BCI is 28-30'' and has been on rat pups since she was 20'' long and 1.5-2 months old.
Second, what king of substrate do you use? It sounds like a piece of slightly decomposed leaf. It really could have been anything, but it doesn't sound like it was something terrible. Either way, I would continue to check the mouth out once a week for about a month or so, just to rule out any kind of infection or blood spot. If it does not re-occur, ch | |
