Acu-Rite Digital Thermometer

No such thing as a stupid question, right??

I bought an Acu-Rite digital thermometer and put in the cage last night. I have it down near the bottom of the cage. What on earth do I do with that long probe-like-thing and the cord? If I understand it correctly, the cord is to measure "outside" temp.. so I was having to reach in the cage and hit the button to show the "inside" temp. But..if I get that cord in there somehow, will the "outside" temp reading actually be the "inside" temp reading? ~confusing myself, even~ ...

Initially, I stretched it tight and bundled the reamaining cord at the very top of the cage and secured it there. A couple hours later, I can't find my snake...I was looking and looking and he had somehow climbed on the thermometer and climbed that cord to the top corner of the cage and was coiled up there in the top corner....Obviously, that isn't gonna work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

We've got all our vivs on digital indoor/outdoor thermometers with hygrometers. We put the long outdoor sensor at the hot end and the unit itself at the cool. They're made by oregon scientific and will show all three readings simultaneously . Very useful and cheap (in the uk) at £9.99 each from Maplins.

I use the probe to measure the temps on the hot side of the cage. Run the wire under the substrate and place the probe on top of the substrate on the hot side... leave the main unit sitting on the substrate on the cool side. I typically leave it set to the "outside" temp seeing as that is the more critical of the two readings.

hmm i use the probe for the cool side and the unit itself for the hot. I get better humidity reading from the warm side because it's a lil more accurate. But anywho, what i did was run the cord on the outside of the tank because I dont want my snakes getting tangled in it especially when they burrow.

its all in preference i guess. =D

Rachel, if you go to www.maplins.co.uk there's a store finder in small letters at the top left of the home page.
They were selling huge quantities at our local large maplins reduced from £20. They've some other types at low prices too but the oregon scientific seemed to have best features.
Oh yes, they're also selling mini foggers for approx £12 (we've paid £30 before this)
Cost me a fortune that month
