me vs lil white bug
i was feeding the baby about a hour ago and i saw a microscopic white bug crawl across her face. have never had a problem with mites in ten years and dont want to start now. i let her finish eating then quickly pulled her out along with everything and PAM'd it down. tank, water dishes, branches, hides, dumped substrate, along with spraying the surrounding areas (was that overboard), wiped down my other snakes, vaccumed, vaccumed again, sprayed everywhere from the snake area to all walking places in distance with lysol (i have ocd i think). the only place i can think of it coming from is the food which are F/T. mites are red and/or black am i correct? if so what the heck was that lil white thing? and are f/t capable of containing mites while still frozen?

Re: me vs lil white bug
Every now and again when I put fresh mulch in with my critters I will see little flying bugs.
I have been told they are harmless and only come to life when things get wet, when things dry out they die.
So far no issues.

Re: me vs lil white bug
Yes it sounds like a different mite then the snake mite.I have had these when i had tarantules.Like said a springtail most likely they should not hurt your snake.Bake your substrate And spray your cage with bedding spray from walmart perma none with Equate.Let it air out before substrate and snake go in.No need to spray snake or water bowl. These little guys just want moisture not your snake. And keep cage dryer maybe get a humidifier in room instead of spraying cage.

i am currently fabricating a humidifier to run to all three set ups. guess i need to get a move on. even tho they are harmless it still drives me nuts that they are there in the first place. but hey... it could always have been worse.

Re: me vs lil white bug
they can come in from expos or who knows, maybe even from the place where the aspen is shredded and packaged. wood mites are just happy to be in the wood, i guess they eat it or something, idk. if they really are wood mites they dont bother the snakes, but they are creepy crawly tiny bugs and they are annoying. you can bake the bedding for a while though and kill them before you use it
