Mouth rot and eye caps?
I've got a lady that has been seeking my advise about her newly acquired/rescued BCI (about 7-8 feet long). She was telling me that her previous owners neglected her after having a baby. She was fed on a normal schedule, but was never handled, and her enclosure had not been cleaned for months. She tells me that the snakes behavior is great, but that she was worried about the snakes eyes. She said that they had been blue for quite I while. I of course reminded her of the shed cycle... but then I received some disturbing pictures. To me it seems like her eyes have caps stuck on them, and I'm no expert but to me it looks like really bad mouth rot.
I have already told her to schedule an appointment immediately. She wants to know what may have caused the mouth rot, and how to prevent it from, getting worse.
Thanks for any help you guys.
~Carly~

Re: Mouth rot and eye caps?
Poor Boa, I'd say lack of care caused both of those symptoms.

Re: Mouth rot and eye caps?
Oh no!!! poor thing! ugh... that mouth rot does not look like fun Her eye caps definitely look like she's in blue - not stuck... I've heard of snakes going into blue for some pretty long periods before.. but who know. It could be both.
Hope everything gets figured out and she gets fixed up!

Re: Mouth rot and eye caps?
Yes this boa need to see a Vet now as it does have mouth rot and will need meds. But the eyes look like the boas just going it to shed. When a boa has retained eye caps it looks more like dry tan / brown shed skin color. Here is a link she could use until she can get this boa to a vet.

Take care

Re: Mouth rot and eye caps?
Generally the adults can go quite a few sheds without shedding the eye caps without real severe problems, but I dunno how long she's been like that. As far as the mouth, yea it looks like a severe case of mouthrot. The vet can prescribe antibiotics but what she can do to help treat the infection is to alternately soak her mouth in slightly diluted hydrogen peroxide and/or a diluted betadine solution. Not the whole head, just up to the eyes so the whole mouth is submerged for a few seconds. Let her out to breathe and do it again a few times. Then I took a mild spray bottle and gently sprayed on the fan setting into the sides of the mouth to wash it out. This worked great for my rescues and they recovered from very severe mouth rot but definitely need the vet in on that one as well. Good luck with her!

Re: Mouth rot and eye caps?
Thanks you guys, I sent her another email. Poor little snakey, I hope she pulls through. I told her to also listen to her breathing, because many neglected snakes have a RI along with the other health issues.
I'll keep ya updated.

Re: Mouth rot and eye caps?
My vet gave me a Chlorhexidine 0.12% mouth rinse solution with zinc. It's actually used for Dogs to control breath. It works wonders and is only about $10.00. You can probably get it without a prescription. I just hold the boas head down and squirt it into either side of the mouth.

Re: Mouth rot and eye caps?
The stomatitis is easily treatable with mouthwash (literally) on a q-tip rubbed across the affected areas. The eyecaps are fine, there's nothing wrong with then and she's in normal blue.

Re: Mouth rot and eye caps?
Alright last I heard she's trying to get her into the vet today. So we'll see how it goes. I'll update when I can.

This advise at the very best is misleading and incomplete and at the worst, completely wrong. The snake needs to see a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Re: Mouth rot and eye caps?
Sorry, my bad. Once again, just suggesting things that have worked for me, assuming not everyone has a herp vet on hand. But you're absolutely right: she should take the snake to a vet. I'll refrain from lending advi ce again, for anything.
