http://photo.redtailboa.net/albuo53/scale_rot I have been busy with all of the babies and checked on my yearling 2days ago he was cloudy when i took him out of the humidity box. today when i checked on him he had this (pic) i'm pretty sure its scale rot. he should shed in a day or two. i read the care sheet and i put him in a giant piece of tuperware (without substrat to seperate him from his little female. the tank was, and is clean. I think i just let him abuse his humidity box to long. how long should i keep him seperate? i got some neosporin and have to build a screen top for his quaintine tank. is it contagious? what should i do about the female he shares his orginal tank with? tha tank has temp range from low 90s to low 8os and humidity is hardly ever over 50% I use cypress as a substrate. and the tank is kept clean. i'm convinced he just soaked way to long. what do you think? sorry so long

Well its hard for me to say, the only scale rot I've dealt with was on my BP, and it didnt look quite like that.

The rot on my BP looked more like rust, and the belly scales were chipped in that area.

BUT if it is scale rot, apply neosporin everyday twice a day, remove substrate from enclosure, lower humidity if possible, and hopefully the next shed should take care of it.
In my BP's case it took 2 sheds, but they were just 3 weeks apart, and no problems since.

Someone else will be able to offer more info on scale rot in general and on boas specifically.

Good luck.

i have never seen it look like that. the stuff i saw was usually darker.
either way, it could be. what i would do is go to the vet and see for sure.

soaking or staying in a humid box for a while can do this, but how long was it in there???

i would seperate him from the female. keep him on newspaper and do what wino said with the neosporin- get the regular kind, not the oine with the steriods in it (pain killer one).

check the lil' lady and see if she is ok and monitor the situation.

definitly go to the vet, just in case

good luck, i hope its nothing and it gets better.

Scale rot is usually darker like cb says..BUT I have seen it look like this also. Usually on a "yellow" colored snake such as an albino burm. Take away the humidity box for atm and treat for scale rot also.

hey talon, first off...that snake has a nice pinkish hue to it. How bout you give it to me and I'll take care of it. I've never really seen scale rot on the side of a boa or python before. Mostly on the belly. Actually, every time I had to deal with it, it was on the belly. Might want to bring a vet in. Does it look like the scales in the colored area or dying????? Kind of dry feeling. The rest of the body looks healthy and it would be a big difference in scales. My king had something like this but it affected his entire body. Took a while to get it under control. Did it by any chance get bit by a rat in that area?? I hope you feed dead but some do feed live and I'm not gonna harp on anyone anymore if they do, I'll just state I'm against live feeding. Let me know and keep us posted....

Like some of the others said, I have never seen scale rot like that on snakes or in pictures. It's always come around as a dark, rusty looking color. If you feed live, then that may could be the cause as well. The best bet would be to see a vet.

UMm..Think a bit here guys. The snake got this while in his humidity box. They tend to have the condensation all over including the sides of the hide box also. That is how it would have gotten such from the being in the humidity box. The albino burms I have come across with such were treated for scale rot and such alleviated the problem also.
Bottom line is you gotta treat the problem and also need to get rid of that humidity box..I think that is where the problem originated from anyway.

Umm neosporin that would be lol Make sure you get the one that doesn't have the pain reliever in it also. As for the female..I would. Anytime a snake has something goping on your best separating them from their mate. Go with a not moist type substrate for now and don't go high on humidity either while treating him too.

I'v never seen that before but if you do decide to treat it in any way you should definatly remove the substrate so none of the medication is rubbed off. Use news paper. Also go ahead and quarantine It can't hurt. thats my .02

yes.. go ahead and treat with tiple antibiotic ointment or neosporin. Keep an eye on it, if it gets worse, take it to the vet and let them give it the once over
