Nic. Boa Laying Partially Inverted
I found my 8 month old Nicaraguan Boa laying partially inverted (back end) today. She's just recently gone into a shed cycle and otherwise, seemed pretty normal until today. I took her out and checked her out. She seemed a bit sluggish but brightened up once she was put down on the floor. I put her on her back to see if she could right herself and she did before I could even set her down. She ate like... a week and a bit ago with no problems too.
Any idea as to what's up with her?

Re: Nic. Boa Laying Partially Inverted
I've had quite a few boas that will do this...I think it's their way of relaxing and 'putting their feet up' (if they had feet).
Yes it was pretty shocking the first time I saw them do this...I opened the cages to make sure they were still alive, LOL...it can be pretty disturbing to see them leaning over like that. As soon as I touched them, they moved upright again.

Re: Nic. Boa Laying Partially Inverted
I guess I'll just keep a close eye on her for any other odd behaviour...

Re: Nic. Boa Laying Partially Inverted
Has she gone to a vet yet, or gotten a fecal? It doesn't sound like a very serious problem yet, but it's always good to get a check-up when you bring home a new snake, just in case.
Is she very young, or a little older? She could be developing follicles or something like that, even without a nearby male. My female ball pythons, even when they're only 2 year old and 700 grams will develop follicles, like hope springs eternal.
Hope it's just her way to relax, though!

Re: Nic. Boa Laying Partially Inverted
I was checking on the snakes before I went to bed, oh, months ago now.
I flashed my light in to Ishara's hide and noticed she was laying on her back. Needless to say, I almost punched a hole through the front of her vivarium to get to her quicker and found that she was balled up as they do, completely on her back with her head sticking up in the center. She flipped right over once she realized the hide was gone... I took her out, put her on her back, and she flipped right over again.
I can only presume she was uncomfortable while digesting the first large rat I'd ever given her. She's not done it again since, but I'll never forget how terrified I was of having lost my very first snake.
