Re: boa stargazing
It's usually the sign of a neurological problem that could be caused by any number of underlying illnesses. Can the snake right itself when you turn it over?
Can you post a pic? Sometimes they just rest their head on the glass of their enclosure staring up. That would not necessarily be stargazing.

Re: boa stargazing
Is this a new behavior for him? It would really help if you could post a pic or a video.

Re: boa stargazing
Is he resting his head on the wall of the enclosure when he does it? Is he eating, pooping, and so on as normal?

Re: boa stargazing
Well, I'm not the expert, as I've never seen one stargaze in person before. It's normal for them to rest their heads on the side of the tank and stare up into space. But just to be on the safe side, better quarantine him from your other snakes and use extreme sanitation measures after handling him.
Does he twist his head around like a corkscrew, or just stare straight up?

Re: boa stargazing
Fully describe what you mean when you say he is stargazing.
Pretend I don't know what the word means and explain to me what you observed.

Re: boa stargazing
stretching up to the top of his tank and looking out of it for somestimes 30 minutes at a time he does this off and on but he doesn't do it when i get him out and handle him. it's almost as if he was looking at something that isn't there.
his head is straight not turned.

Re: boa stargazing
Does he push against the top? How many inches of his body are stretched upward?

Re: boa stargazing
yeah he pushes his head against the top sometimes he is only about a foot and a half long so i'd say about 5 inches
but when he is trying to push on the lid almost half of his body is off the ground.

Re: boa stargazing
He is not stargazing... he is looking up. It is possible that you are describing a symptom of a respritory infection, but most likely, he is just looking up.
Stargazing is a very clearly defined symptom. Thanks to Youtube, I can show you and not just describe it.
This is what stargazing looks like:
YouTube - Danse Macabre
YouTube - Stargazing and head trumors boa
Once you have seen stargazing, you will never mistake anything else for it.

Re: boa stargazing
Sounds pretty normal to me, though it may be a prelude to an escape attempt. Make sure you have clips on the lid. Seriously.

Re: boa stargazing
You're fine asking questions. It is very common for people to hear the word "Star Gaze" and think that their snake is doing it.

Maybe he would like to have something to climb on like a piece of driftwood? What is the setup like?
