Help Elevated Monocytes?!?!

So, I'm posting this for a friend who adopted a snake from me. They rescued a Nic. boa off of CL back in October, who had a few good sized fresh wounds on him. He has made "huffing" noises off and on, but with no mucus, not discharge, no inflammation, etc. They have taken him to the vet several times, and they finally decided to do bloodwork. The only thing that came back abnormal was increased monocytes, and we're talking 6-7 times the normal levels, so pretty extreme. So... any ideas?

America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. – John Quincy Adams (1821)

Re: Elevated Monocytes?!?!

Usually they indicate a viral or parasitic infection of some sort.....it would take more tests

Shouldn't the vet be able to say more about this?

He has 'mono', lol....!!! Well, if this was a human, that's one possibility...also, viral, stress, chronic inflammation, viral, necrosis (let's hope not!), an immune-mediated disease, hyperadrenocorticism, and pyogranulomatous disease* (and don't ask ME what that* is! lol...) Yeah, I'd be concerned...you know (on the necrosis thing) I know of a large boid kept by a reptile/pet store that finally died of internal necrotic tissue from (they speculated) repeated falls from the large branch (more like tree) in his large/tall enclosure. But since this snake came from CL, it's probably just stress after reading our CL humor thread....

Re: Elevated Monocytes?!?!

LOL - yeah, the CL thread would be enough to stress anything/anyone out. As far as what the vet can tell my friend - they're not going to a vet that deals with reptiles. The vet wants to anesthetize(sp?) the snake and do a trans-tracheal wash... without symptoms of an RI... so, yeah....

I had a hunch this was not a reptile vet...I doubt they'll get much info that way versus the price and risks*... (*esp. the anesthesia from a vet unfamiliar with herps...)

Re: Elevated Monocytes?!?!

Monocytes the stuff the force is made out of; if so then thatbsnake will have a strong force to it.
Sorry I'm feeling a little jedi knowledgeable today.

Re: Elevated Monocytes?!?!

Increased levels of Monocytes could indicate chronic inflammatory disease, a parasitic infection, tuberculosis or a viral infection.

The trans-tracheal wash could be to obtain material from the tracheal and bronchial lumens for cytologic and microbiologic evaluations. Using this method avoids contamination of samples with oral flora and tissue.

The snake may not have symptoms of an RI, but doing this wash could allow the vet to see if they have the beginnings of one, so as to 'nip it in the bud' before something serious happens.
