Learn from my mistake
I've made some rookie mistakes in my time but this one is the only mistake that has ever hurt one of my babies...
I love to give my snakes a lot of plant cover in their tanks to help provide them with a sense of security. I usually buy my fake plants at Michaels or Hobby Lobby when they go on sale. Remington, my anery corn snake (and my first snake ever), has had the same cage setup and same plants for over 18 months now. On October 4, I went to check on him because he was due to shed any day. I found strips of shed all over which was strange because he always sheds in one piece for me. I picked him up to check him out and he started thrashing wildly. Turned out he'd managed to squeeze a third of his body through one of the small rings on the fake plants that are used to hang them on the wall for decoration. Fortunately there's been no internal damage but he completely stripped the scales clean off where the ring became wedged. I took these pictures today. He's shed twice since the incident and I still wince every time I look at my poor baby. So please, make sure ALL of the rings or anything your herps could get stuck in, wedged through, or caught on are removed from your decorations and plants.

Aww, poor thing, I had to remove a tree stump hide once cause one of my bp's rubbed off some scales from his head on the rough opening of the darn thing.

Re: Learn from my mistake
I'm really lucky a few scales lost was the worst of it. He could have easily broken some bones...
Sakara, I'll have to look into the ones from dollar store when I get more.

Re: Learn from my mistake
I'm glad he's ok. I cut the rings off of the plants I've used before. Then again, none of the snakes I got them for could fit through them, except for their tails.

Re: Learn from my mistake
I had no warning for the death of my baby, Santos... I will upload some pretty grizzly photos if people want to see, but corn snakes seem prone to this sort of thing. I had Santos in a Herptarium that fit perfectly into my rack system, but had lots of air ventilation holes to allow him better air circulation, etc. Well... he managed to find a loose prong, and push his way through a very tiny hole... skinning him to the muscle, arteries, and bones... I had to put him in the freezer to help him pass. I still have such pain over what I could have done to save him, had I known better. So, to go with Kelly's info, do NOT use these products for snakes

Re: Learn from my mistake
My goodness, how did he get through there?? I'm so thankful it wasn't that bad with Remy. Like I said, he's my first snake and my baby. I'd be devastated if anything happened to him. Thank you for your story Katie. I know how hard it is to share.

I don't want to hijak your thread, but will post pictures, if you want, cause explaining it doesn't seem to work, as it seems IMPOSSIBLE to do what he did He was my very first corn snake, and I was beyond devestated... he was such a good little boy

Re: Learn from my mistake
Hey this thread is all about using my bad experience to keep others from doing the same. I'm all about sharing stories if it means one less snake injured or worse. Pictures are your call.

I would not have believed that if I hadn't seen it. Definitely won't ever use any of those.
So sorry for your loss.

My god. Thank you for sharing that Katie. I know I've used those in the past and I know of others who use them as well. I won't ever be doing that again.

OMG Katie.... I'm sooooooo sorry poor little guy....
I have to say though that if I would have been in that situation, as terrible as it sounds, I prolly would have cut his head off If he was still alive like that he must have been suffering I'm so sorry Poor little guy

That thought not only crossed my mind, but I did almost do it... but I couldn't... I was hysterical, and it took everything in me to put him in the freezer... part of me wanted to rush him to the vet... I was convinced I could still save my little Santos...
