quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
I agree with the concept of quarantine and all with new additions but what are your thoughts and time frame for this. Also let put this into a average Boa keepers eyes and constants. If you have to quarantine/or have a new animal and need to keep it in same room how far away from others do you keep it, how do you keep it, if separate rooms is you thing are they back to back, open doors etc.... All of us do not have snake rooms and share the enviroment with our pals but we also want safety for them. Could you have your main snakes in the same room as the quarantined one? Remember this need to be addressed to the average snake keeper and not the Big Time, Big Money breeders.......Discuss......

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
Doesn't seem to me to be a "debatable" topic.
You don't keep new charges in the same room with your established collection, nor established snakes in the same enclosure with another unless breeding.
- Not because you want to take a photo-shoot.
- Not because you're cleaning cages.
- Not for whichever other ludicrous reason one can spin, only while breeding, period.
IMO, there are few air-borne pathogens - which I know of - but when in closed quarters, one is more likely to be lazy and use the same tool, for example, or whatever else have you.
The notion of quarantine is just that. "Quarantine."
I quarantine to the furthest extents practical. Different environment, different room, blah-blah-blah.
My snakes were each quarantined for nearly a year with the exception of my newest - who was alone for 4 months before being in the same room with another snake. She's since been here for 3 (in the same room) and I've still no problems.
If you haven't the proper accommodations to offer a new charge, then you shouldn't get one. Period.

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
There's no "time frame" for quarantining a boa. Could be just a couple weeks or several months. A lot of it depends entirely on the source of the boa. I've acquired boa and introduced them into my collection in a matter of a week(s). But, I trust the source.
.
As far as distance, I would not keep them in the same room until I was assured they were in good health.
.
You know when the snake is ready to be put into your collection. He/she will show it.
.
Good luck.

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
I am as of now a firm believer of what AGA has said! You dont want to move a snake in to your established collection too soon... We "quarantined" for a few weeks to a month (some with a breeder we never quarantined) and then got lazy and moved the apparent healthy snakes into the room with the rest of our snakes... and now we are having to put down all of our snakes (12) because we didnt properly quarantine and we unknowingly brought IBD into the collection.
I do not want to set you off of getting another snake but I want to stress to you... quarantine, quarantine, quarantine. I would rather be safe than sorry!

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
I agree quarantine is quarantine but I have a few rooms that I say have the temp consistancy that I want. I am overly anal with cleaning and each snake has his/her on stuff. Nolvasan is my friend as is hand sanitizer and bleach for some items. My snakes have never been housed together and are from dealers/breeders that I trust from my own community all my snakes are pretty new to me being bought in 1 in aug, 2 in sept and 1 in Oct. they are all within 1.5 years old. All my snakes have eaten, shed (1 peice), had uric and deficated and seem to be healthy snake like. However 3 of them are in the same room, 2 are withing 1 foot of each other and the 3rd is 12 feet away. no mites, no weising. newest one is in office for a while.

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
All ours were apparently healthy also. The only ones we got from a possibly unreliable source were apparently healthy also... no mites... They also werent the ones that were confirmed IBD. Then about a month or so after we got them they showed up with a RI... and it has all gone down hill from there. From this point on I will never keep new snakes in the same room as my established collection. A snake can carry diseases such as IBD with out symptoms for a long time. This is all my opinion and in the end it is all up to you, but I dont want to see someone end up with the same deal as me...
Oh I forgot... We also have a room that is kept at the perfect temp and humidity for the snakes where the rest of the house is kept how we like it! We put the "quarantined" snakes in there so soon because we couldnt keep their cages proper for them in our room/ closet...

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
From what I've read since Snakelady's ordeal, ibd is contagious enough to worry about "aerosol" spread, even from one end of the house to another, so even with good overall sanitation (disinfectant, handwashing etc) the risk is there...a closed off room sharing the same circulating air isn't really gonna cut it, IMO; but most of us don't have an outbuilding or separate ventilation for a snakeroom, so some luck is needed here too, unfortunately. It is a treacherous disease!

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
Snakelady, alot of my thoughts and questions are from reading your dealings and losses. What a hard experience that had to be. IBD is very scary and I am trying to do the best with what I have. The 4 Boas I have now are the base of what I would like to breed and have as family pets, 3 of the 4 are under 8 months and the oldest being 1.5 yrs.. I guess the best I can do is use every precaution i can, disinfect everything, and quarantine the best I can. No more snakes for a while

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
Several illnesses are airborne. That is why you need to keep them in separate rooms.
You also need to bake the rats separately, in different parts of the oven.
Gotcha!

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
You got to forgive me a little ... as I am very paranoid at this time and I dont think you can ever be too careful... GL with all your babies... Ya we were pretty quick, we got our first snake in Jan 09 and decided we wanted to breed by May and had 12 snakes by July 09... That wont happen again... All you can do is be know the risks and do everything you can to prevent against it!

Re: quarantining, how do YOU do it and ????
For that matter, you could also catch it in the waiting room...they are now asking snake owners who suspect their snake has this to try to minimize exposure to others while waiting, but how many owners have a clue what's wrong with their snake??? "Do you feel lucky???..."
